4  Relationships: People listen to us because of who we know.  Sacrifice: People listen to us because of what we have suffered.  Character: People listen to us because of our integrity. 4

5  Insight: People listen to us because of what we know.  Transparency: People listen to us because we are transparent.  Experience: People listen to us because we’ve succeeded in the past. 5

6  Competence: People listen to us because of our abilities and expertise.  Courage: People listen to us when we demonstrate courage.  Value: People listen to us because we make them feel that they are important to us. 6

Character  Character is More than Talk  Your character determines who you are.  Who you are determines what you see.  What you see determines what you do.  Character is a Choice  We have no control over a lot of things in life.  But we do choose our character. In fact, we create it every time we make choices. 9 9

10  Character Brings Lasting Success with People  Followers do not trust leaders whose character they know to be flawed, and they will not continue following them.  Leaders Cannot Rise Above the Limitations of their Character  Have you ever seen highly talented people suddenly fall apart when they achieved a certain level of success?  Face the music.  The beginning of character building comes when you face your flaws, apologize, and deal with the consequences of your actions. #1. 13  When it comes to commitment, there are following types of people:  Cop-outs. People who have no goals and do not commit.  Holdouts. People who don’t know if they can reach their goals, so they’re afraid to commit.  Dropouts. People who start toward a goal but quit when the going gets tough.  All-outs. People who set goals, commit to them, and pay the price to reach them.  To improve your commitment, do the following:  Measure it.  Know what’s worth dying for. #3. Commitment 13

14 #4. Communication You can be a more effective communicator if you follow four basic truths.  Simplify Your Message  See the Person  Show the Truth  Seek a Response 14

15 #5. Competence  “Competence goes beyond words. It’s the leader’s ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others know that you know.” -John C. Maxwell We all admire people who display high competence. If you want to cultivate that quality, here’s what you need to do:  Keep Improving  Follow Through with Excellence  Accomplish More than Expected  To improve your competence, do the following:  Get your head in the game.  Redefine the standards.  Find ways to improve. 15

19 #8. Focus “What people say, and what people do are entirely different things.” –Margaret Mead, Anthropologist  How should you focus your time and energy? Use these guidelines to help you:  Focus 70 Percent on Strengths  Focus 25 Percent on New Things  Focus 5 Percent on Areas of Weakness 19

20 #9. Generosity “No person was ever honoured for what he received. Honour has been the reward for what he gave.” –Calvin Coolidge  Cultivate the quality of generosity in your life. Here’s how:  Be Grateful for Whatever You Have  Put People First  Don’t Allow the Desire for Possessions to Control You  Regard Money as a Resource  Develop the Habit of Giving 20

They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” –Conrad Hilton  What qualities do leaders possess that enable them to make things happen? I see at least four: 1.They Know What They Want 2.They Push Themselves to Act 3.They Take More Risks 4.They Make More Mistakes 21

22  To improve your initiative, do the following:  Change your mind-set  Don’t wait for opportunity to knock  Take the next step #10. Initiative 22

23 #11. Listening  Keep in mind that you have two purposes for listening; to connect with people and to learn. For that reason, you should keep your ears open to these people:  Your followers  Your customers  Your competitors  To improve your listening, do the following:  Listen between the lines 23

24 #12. Passion  Take a look at four truths about passion and what it can do for you as a leader:  Passion is the First Step to Achievement  Passion Increases Your Willpower  Passion Changes You  Passion Makes the Impossible Possible 24

26 #14. Problem Solving  Leaders with good problem-solving ability demonstrate five qualities:  They anticipate problems  They accept the truth  They see the big picture  They handle one thing at a time  They don’t give up a major goal when they’re down 26

27  To improve your problem solving, do the following:  Look for trouble  Time – spend time to discover the real issue  Exposure – find out what others have done  Assistance – have your team study all angles  Creativity – brainstorm multiple solutions  Hit It – implement the best solution  Surround yourself with problem solvers #14. 29 #16. Responsibility  Take a look at the following characteristics of people who embrace responsibility:  They get the job done  They are willing to go the extra mile  They are driven by excellence  They produce regardless of the situation 29

30 #17. Security  Insecure leaders have several common traits:  They don’t provide security for others  They take more from people than they give  To improve your security, do the following:  Get some help 30

Self-Discipline  If you want to become a leader for whom self- discipline is an asset, follow these action points:  Develop and follow your priorities  Make a disciplined lifestyle  Challenge your excuses  Remove rewards until the job is done  Stay focused on results  To improve your self-discipline do the following:  Sort out your priorities  Get rid of excuses 31

32 #19. Servanthood  A true servant leader:  Puts others ahead of his own agenda  The Law of Empowerment says that only secure leaders give power to others. It’s also true that only secure leaders exhibit servanthood.  Is not position-conscious 32

33 #20. Vision  Vision starts within  Vision meets others’ needs  Vision helps you gather resources 33

34 #21. Vision  Where does vision come from? You must listen to several voices.  The Inner Voice  The Unhappy Voice  The Successful Voice  The Higher Voice 34

36 For leaders, success and failure comes from: Need for total control Refusing to hear no Ignoring the “experts” Single-minded Insensitive to others Betrayal of trust Overly ambitious Over-managing Unable to think strategically Unable to adapt to situations 36

37 LEADERSHIP ISSUES Employees not performing well I do not have enough time to do my job, because I am doing every job No one will buy into my vision for my organization Everyone is stupid and they are not interested in learning I can’t get anyone motivated No one listens to me 37

38  Keep growing.  Empower followers to do great things  A legacy is created only when a leader puts his/her organization into position to do great things without him/her. 38

39 39 Summary The primary goal of a leader is to get the most of his/her employee. To accomplish this goal, it is imperative that the leader fully understands how people are motivated. Otherwise, the organization will never be as good as it could be.
