Secretions directly enter blood and travel to every body organ But not all cell respond…only target cells w/specific receptors Ligands – chemicals bind to receptors Hormones are types of ligands

3 Functional Classification of Hormones
Autocrine Do not travel in blood, but other body fluids Mostly interact with the cell that produced them Paracrine Travel short distances via blood or body fluids to target cells Coordinates cells within an organ Pheromones Secretions leave body and signal cells of other organisms Used for identification and sexual behavior

4 Structural Classifications of Hormones
Peptide Hormones Made of amino acids Initiate rapid changes in the body Stay in blood (broken down there) Lipid Hormones Made from cholesterol and fats Long lasting effects Broken down within a cell Used to regulate body fluid and sexual reproduction

Pituitary Gland Pineal Gland Adrenal Gland Thyroid & Parathyroid Pancreas Thymus Gonads Ovary Testis (Placenta)
