 On your paper write down 1-20  List the answers to this question Who am I?

 How many of those 20 things are roles?  How many are individual characteristics?  What does this say about you as a person?

 Agents of Socialization: specific individuals, groups, and institutions that enable socialization to take place  Primary agents of socialization:  Family  Peer group  School  Mass Media

 Most important agent of socialization  Role is to socialize young children  Can be:  Intentional (Ex: Father teaches child about telling the truth)  Unintentional (Ex: Father tells child to be polite but child often sees father being rude)  Families are different and many can vary according to a combination of subgroups (race, social class, religion, etc)

 Peer Group: Composed of individuals of roughly equal age and similar social characteristics  Very influential during pre-teen and early teen years  Members will shape themselves into the person they think the group wants them to be  Focus of subculture of group (norms and values)

 Much of socialization is deliberate  Schools attempt to transmit cultural values (patriotism, responsibility, citizenship, etc.)  There is unintentional socialization taking place there as well

 Mass Media: Instruments of communication that reach large audiences with no personal contact between those sending the information and those receiving the information  Major forms = books, films, Internet, magazines, TV, etc.  TV:  Has most influence  Negative criticisms (violence, image of white middle- class society)  Positive criticisms (expands viewers’ world)

 Total Institution: Setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society for a set period of time and are subject to tight control  Examples: prison, military boot camp, monasteries, psychiatric hospital  Primary concern is resocializing member to become a part of normal society again  Resocialization: Involves break with past experiences and learning of new values and norms  Once sense of self has been weakened it is easier to conform/control them
