3  Based on the video from Tuesday, what adjectives would you use to describe the situation in France in 1789, and why?

4 A. Influence of Enlightenment Ideas 1. Now people were questioning the place of the Church and government, and developing new ideas about the rights of the people (ex: Locke) 2. People were inspired by the American Revolution.

5 B. “Ancien Regime” = Old Order 1. There were unfair divisions in society; these classes were called estates.

6  Made up of the clergy (church officials)  Less than 1 % of the population  Owned 10 % of the land  Paid no taxes

7  Made up of nobles  About 2 % of the population  Owned 20 % of land  Paid no taxes  Still had feudal privileges (many still owned serfs and could demand work from peasants)

8  Made up of peasants, urban workers and members of the middle class (known as the Bourgeoisie).  97 % of the total population  Owned 70 % of the land.  Paid heavy taxes to the Church and the government  Many were paid low wages

12 B. 3 rd Estate did not really have any political representation→ they had no voice! C. 3 rd Estate faced unfair laws

13 A. Crop failures and bad harvests in the 1780’s led to high bread prices. 1. King did not respond or try to help the people B. Louis needed to repay debts, so he raised taxes repeatedly. C. Inefficient tax system (who’s paying all the taxes?) D. France is bankrupt → there is no money in the Treasury → the immediate cause of the French Revolution!

14  Harvard professor and historian Crane Brinton, after studying many different revolutions, came up with a theory on how revolutions have similar conditions in place prior to the revolution occurring. The revolutionary “fever” begins with certain “symptoms”
