HISTORY OF DESKTOP (ALTAIR 8800 AND COMPETITORS) Sold in 1974-75 Input with toggle switches, output by LEDs Followed by Imsai 8080 by IMS Associates, used same bus structure M6800 Computer kit from SouthWest Technical Products Company sold better Price and cheap peripheral kits

HISTORY OF DESKTOP (APPLE PRODUCTS) Apple II had color graphics, extensive software, and cheap floppy disks Macintosh also successful Apple Lisa failed due to programs that were too complex and too pricey

HISTORY OF TABLETS (LATER TABLETS) GRiD created Tandy Zoomer, was smaller, considered a Personal Digital Assistant along with the Apple Newton MessagePad Tablets still failed due to high prices, challenge of getting the stylus to work, and in the PepperPad’s case lack of power

HISTORY OF TABLETS (SUCCESS) Amazon Kindle in 2007 ran similar OS to desktops Apple iPad released in 2010 Samsung Galaxy Tab Motorola Xoom Cheaper, faster, efficient and customizable

COMPARING HISTORIES Price, Purpose, and Standardization Desktop and Tablet both sold well once affordable Customization helped both become marketable, but tablets are used by one person, desktops by a family Standardization helps desktops more with applications, but tablets are becoming more standardized

COMPARING DESKTOP AND TABLET Flash is not on all tablets, but some web sites run faster on tablets Many find keyboards easier to touchscreens due to familiarity Processing is faster on desktop Desktop applications are usually backwards- compatible, but efficiency is not always consistent Battery life for tablets Tablets are more customizable

CAN THEY WORK TOGETHER? Dockable tablet Desktop virtualization Separate OSs (Windows 8)

FUTURE Cloud Computing What happens to the desktop when the tablet can get power from the Cloud? Problems?

CONCLUSION (WHAT SHOULD THE CONSUMER DO) The tablet is dominant, but the desktop for now will exist as a backup/alternative How much is the consumer willing to pay? What software? How to connect? Who will use it? Is a printer required? Size? Will something replace both of them?
