SIMPLE PERCENTAGE PROBLEM There are two (2) strategies to tackle a percentage problem as in the example below: There are two (2) strategies to tackle a percentage problem as in the example below: Example 1: Example 1: A school library has a collection of 400 books of which 80 are new. Find the percentage of new books?

SIMPLE PERCENTAGE PROBLEM The first strategy is to find the % of unit quantity of a given quantity and multiply the result with the required %. The first strategy is to find the % of unit quantity of a given quantity and multiply the result with the required %. 400 books = 100% 400 books = 100% 1 book = 100% 1 book = 100% 400 400 Therefore, Therefore, 80 books = 80 X 100% = 20% 80 books = 80 X 100% = 20% 400 400

SIMPLE PERCENTAGE PROBLEM The second strategy is to find the % of certain amount that could lead to the finding of % of the required amount. The second strategy is to find the % of certain amount that could lead to the finding of % of the required amount. 400 books = 100%400 books = 100% 40 books = 10% 40 books = 10% Therefore, Therefore, 80 books = 20% 80 books = 20%

SIMPLE PERCENTAGE PROBLEM Example 2: Syukri scored 88% of the total marks in his final examination. If the total marks were 800 marks, how many marks did he score? Syukri scored 88% of the total marks in his final examination. If the total marks were 800 marks, how many marks did he score? Strategy 1: 100 % = 800 marks 100 % = 800 marks 1 % = 800 / 100 = 8 marks 1 % = 800 / 100 = 8 marks Therefore, 88 % = 88 x 8 = 704 marks

Strategy 2: Find the amount of certain % that could lead to the finding of amount of the required %. 100% = 800 marks 100% = 800 marks 1% = 8 marks 1% = 8 marks 80 % = 640 marks 80 % = 640 marks Therefore, Therefore, 88 % = 80% + 8% 88 % = 80% + 8% = 640 marks + (8X8)marks = 640 marks + (8X8)marks = 640 marks + 64 marks = 640 marks + 64 marks = 704 marks = 704 marks
