2 October 2002 : IETF published four proposed standards regarding IDNs June 2003 Guidelines for the Implementation of Internationalized Domain Names (version 1.0) were published by ICANN August 2003 IMAA( Internationalizing Mail Addresses in Applications) Draft came out IDN Activities

3 CNNIC : Launched in Nov, 2000 running around 200,000 JPRS : Launched in April, 2001 running around 51,000 TWNIC : Launched in June, 2000 running around 100,000 Verisign : Launched in Nov, 2000 running around 210,000 Registries of IDN Launches

4 Deployment of Hangeul.KR Hangeul.KR is launched in August 19 10:00 Taking registrations at second level ex) 한글.kr However, ASCII names are still registered at third level ex) nic.or.kr

5 Deployment of Hangeul.KR Taking Conservative approach - Length of domain names : 2 - 17 - Number of allowed characters : 2350 (based of Korean Standard KSX 1001:1998) * In unicode table, there are 11,172 - Reserved Words : 769 (To reserve name space mostly category names) : 60 (abusive words)

6 Registration Policy Sunrise Period for public names, registered trade marks and company names

7 Registration Policy Reserved Names for the following Organizations (about 13,000 Names) - Governments - Education Institutions - Legislative Bodies - etc. Plan to preserve the list for one year

8 Registration Policy Registered Trade Marks : Three names can be registered per certificate ie) sktelecom : 에스케이텔레콤.kr, sk 텔레콤.kr, sk 탤래콤.kr Registered Company Names : Two names can be registered per certificate ie) Samsung Electronics Inc. : 삼성전자.kr or 삼성전자주식회사.kr Taking registrations for six weeks and will do lottery in one week if multiple applications were received

9 Registration Policy 1 domain name per certificate (company certificate or ID number) Taking registrations for two weeks and will do lottery in two weeks if multiple applications were received After 2nd stage, First Come, First Served

10 KRNIC is running 7 Authorized Agency KRNIC is running its own communication program between KRNIC and Agencies KRNIC is charging the agencies 15,400won(including tax) per domain name Agencies is charging the customers around 22,000won (including tax) price varies among agencies Authorized Agency (Registrar)

11 Running zone files in puny code format Showing both hangeul and puny code on whois service Using Verisign's I-nav plug-in to convert hangeul to puny code at user's application Redirecting hangeul domain traffics to plug-in installation page by.kr name server and its secondary servers Distributing code convertor Service

12 Plug-in collisions Netpia's ngDNS is redirecting hangeul domain traffics to their plug- in distributing site awareness Problems
