Michelle A. Duda, Ph.D., BCBA, Dean L. Fixsen, Ph.D. & Karen A. Blase Ph.D., Melissa Van Dyke, LCSW Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill Working Smarter: The implementation journey to improve student outcomes

Learning Objectives Clearly articulate “what did we do/how did we do it” Implementation Overview Framework for implementation via the “Six Stages of Implementation” Introduction of Implementation Drivers Identify what current “stage of implementation” your state/division/school is in

“In theory there is no difference between theory and practice; in practice, there is.” Yogi Berra Section Outline Part One: Innovation Fluency Part Two: Implementation Fluency Part Three: A Framework for Implementation (Stages of Implementation) Part Four: Implementation Drivers Part Five: Continuous Improvement Cycles

Pre-Requisite: Defining “IT” Pre-requisites: o The “it” must be operationalized whether it is:  An Evidence-Based Practice or Program  A Best Practice Initiative  A Systems Change Initiative Operationalize  Part of Speech: verb Definition: to define a concept or variable so that it can be measured or expressed quantitatively Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.7) Copyright © 2003-2008 Lexico Publishing Group, LLC

What is Effective School-wide Discipline?? Core intervention components Clearly described (who/what) Practical measure of fidelity Fully operationalized (do/say) Field tested (recursive revision) Contextualized (org./systems fit) Effective (worth the effort)

The Challenge Each year, more research is done More careful methods are crafted for reviewing research and identifying evidence-based practices and programs More attention is directed to evidence-based practices and programs in journals, conferences, and meetings Yet, it is a challenge to realize sustainable benefits for children, families, and caregivers on a broad scale

Two Sides of the Same Coin “What” AND “How” To successfully implement and sustain the use of any intervention, framework, practice, or program you need to understand: The WHAT - The “it”. What is the intervention, framework, practice or program (e.g. the Pyramid Model) AND The HOW - Effective implementation and sustainability frameworks (e.g. strategies to change and maintain behavior of adults)
