A house to Jesús Soto

Venezuela, 1923 - 2005 Well known Venezuelan artist who works in Kinetic Art style. Energy is one of the elements most eye-catching in Soto's work, especially his experimentation with visual effects, a key feature of Kinetic Art. Soto's work awakes the viewer's perception

The design was inspired on the kinetic quality of Soto’s works. I used a composition of squares to make a spatial 3D red. Moving these squares up and down through different floor levels I created a lot of movement. The concept of the building is to have multiple gardens with square form, through which the stair system make possible going up and down the building.

Then the house is divided by an edge of gardens and you go from the most public areas to the most private as you ascend. Each garden has a different way to be crossed and includes little benches on its borders. The idea was that you could see gardens upwards and downwards the area you were and that you needed to cross the gardens to go up and down the building and to go from one side to another.

The building has a lot of movement and I wanted that all that movement was appreciated from everywhere so I sought a lot of transparency. Stairs leave narrows between each step. Privacy is given through different heights.

For the workshop or studio area I wanted to get a lot of free space on the back of the building. Having other floors advancing above it on the heights and leaving one square of light where the sky can be seen.

For the bedroom I used a Le Corbusier style. The room is located transversely to the living-room, a level higher.

The structure of the house is made up many rectangular columns and structural exterior walls made of concrete. The roof is made with square and rectangular pergolas, some of them with glass coverings and some other with concrete coverings.
