Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers and Decimals

Bell Ringer: Page 15 in JBHM binder (DOK 2)

Introduction/Focus: Do you remember talking about GPAs for seniors from yesterday? Well, guess what? The GPA must be taken to the nearest thousandth place in some cases in order to get the grades in an order. So, we must be able to order decimal numbers also.

Guided Practice: (DOK 1 and 2) Ordering Decimals Note: (3.45 should be “three and forty-five hundredths” not “three point forty-five”).

2.123 2.167 2.129 “How can we tell which of these decimal amounts is the largest?”

2.123 2.167 2.129 1) Align the numbers on top of each other making sure that the decimal points are aligned: 2.123 2.167 2.129 Therefore, the numbers in order from greatest to least are: 2.167, 2.129, and 2.123

Order these from least to greatest (ascending) 3.672, 3.521, and 2.670 46.907, 46.970, and 4.690

Ordering Activity: Groups of four. 1 sheet of blank paper. Write a nine-digit number (including a decimal) of your choice on the paper and immediately turn it over on your desk. When I say “go,” you must work together to place yourselves either in ascending or descending order. Each team then passes its numbers to another group, and the teams must work again to order themselves correctly.

Independent Practice/Activities: Clothesline Game – String a clothesline (with clothespins) You will have a total of five minutes to put yourselves in order from least to greatest! WITHOUT TALKING!!!
