FRED A OLDS JANUARY 12 AND 13, 2016 What will YOU do?

Science Experiment … Demonstration Experiment Demonstration An experiment tests at least 2 different materials. Example: In which type of soil will a bean plant grow more? A demonstration doesn’t test different materials. Examples of demonstrations: Making a “volcano.” Or solar system model Creating an electrical circuit.

You can turn a demonstration idea into an experiment. A demonstration … …turned into an experiment If you wanted to create an electrical circuit, you can change it into an experiment by… … testing different types of materials or metals for the electricity to flow through. Or you can test different types of batteries. But you can only change one part of the circuit.

Title 8 words or less Purpose/Problem Procedure/ Methods 1. 2. 3. 4. Data/Results: Charts & Graphs Conclusion Hypothesis Abstract Summary of what you did Literature Research WHAT NEEDS TO BE ON MY BOARD? Acknowledgment To parents, teacher or friend who helped with the project Materials

Hypothesis ● Hypothesis: This is what you think the answer will be to your question. ● It is a statement of your educated guess. ● Example of hypothesis: I think an apple will fall to the ground faster than a watermelon

Problem/Question This is what you want to discover. It must be a written question. If you are not comparing something, then it is a demonstration and not an experiment. You have to be able to measure or graph the results for something to be considered an experiment

Materials ● List everything needed for the experiment. ● Your list should tell how much, how many, what kind, or what size for every item listed. ● If possible, use metric measurements. ● Include any instruments used to measure the results.

STEPS TO CREATE YOUR PROJECT: 1.Choose your question or problem 2.Do literature research 3.Make a hypothesis (guess what will happened) 4.Do the experiment to test your hypothesis 5.Keep a log book during your experiment 6.Observe and record data from experiment 7.State your conclusions 8.Create your board to show what your learned

Procedure or Methods ● Explains what you did ● This is a list of numbered steps followed during the experiment. ● Be sure to tell how to set up the materials and what to do. ● Tell how to measure the results.

Data/Results ● This includes a data table and/or a graph of recorded results. ● Keep careful notes of everything you do and everything that happens. ● The experiment needs at least 2 trials or samples and should include all measurements and observations. ● Do any calculations needed from your raw data to obtain the numbers you need to draw your conclusions. ● You can also include pictures or photographs

Example Data Table: # of PlantsTrial 1Trial 2Trial 3Average 1 2 3

Conclusion ● This is a summary stating your findings. ● Was your hypothesis accepted or rejected? ● How can this information be useful in the real world? ● What did you learn?

To experiment! Camouflage: people, skittles and M&Ms Dirty socks and detergent: who will win?! ACID and BASE Lunch box mess TAST E

Earthworms Magnets To experiment! Crystals Balloons

Presentation Practice Be enthusiastic! Know your project…every step! Body language – Stand straight – Smile – Eye Contact – Be confident
