READING FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS
2
Who Am I?
3
Why Are You Here? This course is a half credit course that will count for your online graduation requirement. This course will help prepare you for standardized reading tests especially the PERT. This course will make you an IMPROVED and SUCCESSFUL reader now and in college.
4
Supplies A BOOK for your blog (it CAN be what you are reading for English class) A FOLDER and PAPER for notes A USB/FLASH DRIVE Earbuds

BVS vs. FLVS You actually get to see your teacher. You may only submit assignments in the module we are currently working in. You get up to 3 tries on each one except for tests. You actually receive a zero for an assignment if you don’t complete it before the due date. This zero CAN be made up until the module closes. BVS teachers have office hours that are similar to the regular school day. We also work 3 nights a week. We are NOT available 8am-8pm. We follow the pace chart and it mirrors the school calendar. You will have your half credit the week after winter break. DBA’s are done in person rather than on the phone. We will talk about what you learned during class.
6
Monthly Contact Even though we see each other on a weekly basis, a monthly contact with a parent is a required component of all BVS courses. Parent contact is important so that they may be informed of your progress and I can answer any questions or concerns that may arise. You parent will get contacted even if you are doing a great job, are on pace, and/or have a 100%. They actually like it If you aren’t working and/or have a D or F, they will get a call more than once a month. They don’t like that.

The First 4 Assignments You will be working on 1.02-2.01 this week. 1.02-Research a college-Save all the answers to your research questions in a Word document. Save that doc on your flash drive. 1.03-Create a blog-Write down your user name, password, and URL in a safe place. Answer the 3 questions on the handout and not the 2 questions on the class website. 1.04-Pre-test-What knowledge are you coming in with? This assignment does not hurt your grade. 2.01-10 question multiple choice worksheet on Main Idea The directions are in the class for all 4 and on your hand out for 1.02 and 1.03.

Teacher Graded Assignments Title the document with your last name and the lesson number. ex: Tracey102 Do not use period or any other special punctuation marks or symbols. Upload the attachment to the assignment under “assessments”. Check the box that says “submit for grading” and then click “submit”. You will usually get your grade and feedback by the next day

Academic Integrity Please do not take answers from the Internet or from a classmate. All of your work is checked for originality using turnitin.com A variety of consequences will be administered if you are caught cheating or plagiarizing. If you are unsure if your work is original, please contact me before submitting it. Be sure to log out of your course each day to prevent other students from accessing your work. Never share your password. Be sure to save your work on your personal flash drive and do not share this flash drive with anyone. Remember that you are working on a computer and it tracks everything you do. I will know if you are cheating, “Christmas treeing” an assignment, or not logging in.

Tips for Success Log in at flvs.net as soon as the bell rings. Be sure to log off before you leave. Work bell to bell. Take notes during my visits and when you read the lessons. You CAN use these notes on ALL assignments including tests! Save your work on your flash drive or on the class website. You never save anything on the desktop. Check your course email if it says you have a message. It will either be feedback on an assignment or a class announcement. Email is also the quickest way to reach me. Check your gradebook for graded assignments and feedback. Check your pace chart for required work for the week AND work in order. Read each lesson (LESSONS) and take notes. Then complete the corresponding assignment (ASSESSMENTS). Check off the work on your pace chart. Resubmit any assignments, as needed (GRADEBOOK). Be sure to submit all assignments for the week by Friday at the end of the period.

A Few Reminders You do NOT need to work from home after school or on the weekends! If you have a question, please email me through the class website. You may only text me after school hours. You can NOT exempt the final and it is actually worth 20% of your grade. Do your best. This is a “real” class that goes on your transcript and affects your GPA. Remember that you need to pass this class in order to graduate.
