Mopani District Municipality depends largely on the Letaba, and the Olifant River systems as well as ground water augmentation The Letaba catchment is over stressed. There are five large dams, namely, Ebenezer, Tzaneen, Magoebaskloof, Nsami, Middle letaba which supply water across municipalities in Mopani.
10
Mopani DM has nine Regional Water Schemes with 24 Water Treatment Works (WTW) with a total design of Ml/d and currently producing 202, 08 Ml/d. Out of 24 WTW, 23 are operational and 1 not operational namely Metz Package Plant – Alternative supply from mountain spring

CHALLENGES Illegal Connections;
The Bulk pipe lines, on the entire Bulk Water Schemes, have a lot of leakages caused by illegal connections. The connections are done by communities on pipe lines from water treatment works to various reservoirs. The extent of the illegal connections has resulted in high water losses on bulk pipelines and thus water does not reach existing reservoirs and the sections of distribution network.
40
CHALLENGES Supply System Below Standard
Most villages within the scheme have water supply systems which are below the minimum standard, There is no proper reticulation. Some people walk for long distances to fetch water Thabina Water Treatment works is drawing more water than the dam can supply Poor state of repair of the water system; The existing Bulk pipe lines are currently perforated with illegal connections. Most pipelines were built pre 1994 using Asbestos Cement (AC) pipes. This type of pipes contributes to water losses since they are prone to cracks and (Solid) settlements.
41
CHALLENGES Increase in water demand
The design of most of infrastructures within the scheme was based on the demand of 25l/c/d, which has been beyond doubt proven to be an unrealistic figure. The consumption pattern has significantly changed since most of the communities have illegally connected water into their yards. This automatically rises to yard connection category with consumption between l/c/d. Furthermore, the villages within the scheme have grown in population resulting in increased water demand.
42
Challenges and interventions
Vandalism and theft of water services infrastructure. Public awareness on By-Laws and enforcement Water allocations The review of the allocated quota to allow upgrades Illegal connections that renders water supply schemes inefficient. Extension of water reticulation network and uproot/remove illegal connections Ageing water infrastructure Source more funds to replace it, e.g asbestos pipes Demand higher than the supply capacity Upgrading of the water infrastructure Ageing infrastructure resulting into high frequency in services interruption Develop replacement program and source funding Physical condition of the water services infrastructure (WWTP) Refurbish and rehabilitate both water and waste water plants
