Real World Data Lab A Lab in Data Analysis and Peer Review Listen to this Animal

What does Data Analysis mean or require? Data – anything that is observed using the senses Analysis – uses mathematics, statistics, logic to make sense of the data - mathematics, statistics, logic shows how the data can support a “claim” or not support the “claim” Peer Review – process by which procedures and results of an experiment are evaluated by other scientists

Today, you will do peer review and use math, graphing and a little bit of algebra to support another’s student claim. Guiding Question: Can temperature be predicted by counting cricket chirps? Analysis: 1.Calculate chirps/15 sec 2.Plot number of chirps/15 sec versus temperature (F 0 ) 3.Graph the data 4.Draw a best fit line Claim: Air temperature can be estimated by adding the number 40 to the number of cricket chirps per 15 seconds Re-evaluate the Claim: Use equation of line to support or not support claim

Graphing Reminders 1.Title 2.Label for x-axis 3.Unit for x-axis 4.Label for y-axis 5.Unit for y-axis 6.Appropriate Scale for x and y axis 7.Take up as much of graph area as possible 8.Clear plot point 9.Neatness 10.Straight line best fit Can you find all the reminders on the above graph?

Let’s do the lab! 1.Read the lab information 2.Complete Critical Thinking Questions #1-2-3 3.Use a ruler to draw the Line-of-Best Fit 4.Hand in a graph with title and name on it

How to use an equation of a line to support or not support the claim: Temperature = # chirps/15 seconds +40. Follow the steps below to determine y=mx + b. 1. Write the equation of a line: y=mx+b 2. The slope of the line (m) tells the steepness of the line. Calculate the slope of the line by using the points from the line-of best fit you created. Look at the graph and find the two * points. x 2 -x 1 is (30,70) y 2 -y 1 is (50,90) m= y 2 -y 1 /x 2 -x 1 = 90-70/50-30 = 20/20 = 1 m=1 3. Use the value for m=1 and the one of the * points to solve for “b” and complete solving for the equation of the line. y=mx+b 70 = 1 (30) + b 70 = 30 + b b=40 4. Write the claim in the equation of the line format: Temperature = 1(#chirps/15sec) + 40 5. Pick a corresponding # chirps/15 sec and temperature from the data. Plug in and see if the equation is true. 75 degrees F = 1 (35) + 40 Since the equation is true, the claim can be supported. Try others.
