 Does a mother’s or father’s right or left handedness determine their child’s handedness?

 The purpose of my investigation is to determine if a mother’s or father’s right or left handedness determine their child’s handedness. This is important to know because I am very curious and I want to know.

 I hypothesize that a mother’s right or left handedness determines their child’s handedness. I believe this because my mom was born right handed even though my grandfather taught her how to write with her left hand. I was still born right handed.

 No materials needed!!!

 Manipulated variable – person being asked.  Responding variable - handedness of person and parents.  Constant variable-people who are asked must know mother’s and father’s handedness.

1. Ask test subject if they are left or right handed. Record responses. 2. Ask test subject if their mother is left or right handed and if their father is left or right handed. Record responses. 3. Calculate the percentage that has the same handedness as their mother

4.Calculate the percentage that has the same handedness as their father. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 four more times. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 for five more trials.

 My hypothesis was incorrect. A mother’s right or left handedness does not determine their child’s right or left handedness. The average for female to father was 70%, and the average of female to mother is 100%. The percentage of male to father is 93.4% and the average of male to mother was 78.4%. This means that children match their mother 81.7% and their father 85.9% of the time.
