2 Day 8 – 9/26 Copy the following into your journal, then answer the promt that follows. Dramatic irony – audience understands more about the events of a story than a character. Situational irony – what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected or appropriate. Verbal irony – A character says one thing but really means the opposite. Now, give an example of one of these types of irony. Power-Up! Please label binders and journals with 2 labels, block number on left, 1 st initial and last name on right

Return to your seat and silently complete the back of Pedestrian Elements of a Story from last class (metaphor/ simile/and drawing. Use book to assist you.

4 “The Pedestrian” Vocabulary Acquisition – Prefix/Suffix/Roots A word can consist of three parts: the root, a prefix, and a suffix. Prefixes and suffixes are known as affixes because they are affixed to (attached to) a root. Prefixes and suffixes, which originated as words themselves, are now syllables added to roots to create new words.

5 Prefix/Suffix/Roots Continued The root is the base element of the word—the part of the word that contains the basic meaning (definition) of the word. A prefix is a syllable(s) forming a word element placed before a root, word, or word group to modify the meaning or make a new word. A suffix is a syllable(s) forming a word element that is placed after a root, word, or word group to modify the meaning or make a new word. The suffix may also modify the word’s grammatical function by redefining its part of speech (e.g., noun, verb, adjective, adverb).

6 Complete Vocabulary Acquisition Table Using the prefixes, roots, and suffixes on the reverse of your paper, complete the chart silenty and individually. An example has been done for you with “pyromania”. You have 20 minutes. The first 2 students finished will receive a prize. Go!

7 Team Break Out! Each team will receive 2-3 different questions. In your teams, answer the questions and prepare to present them to the class.
