2 Journal Write (Bellwork) 10/13  Write about your first day of high school. What were some of the thoughts that went through your head? What emotions did you experience? What were your hopes and expectations? Were they met?  Explain your first day of school using at least 3 complete sentences.

3 Bellwork (10/15)  On page 14, Melinda speaks about her family. In a journal response, answer the following questions using at least 3 sentences.  Family communication: How does communication break down in Melinda's family? What could each person do to improve it? If you were a parent, how would communication be in your family? What’s the problem with little communication in a family or any relationship?

4 Bellwork (10/21)  Based on the video, respond to the following questions.  What similarities can you find between the video clip and Speak? 6 Bellwork (10/27)  David Petrakis invites Melinda to pizza at his house, but she struggles to come to her decision.  What is her internal conflict? What are the two sides of her internal argument she experiences? (page 132).  What happens in “A Night to Remember”?  Write your answer using at least 2 sentences.

7 Literary Terms to Know  Dynamic Character: A character who undergoes change.  Round Character: A character with many sides to his/her personality.

11 Symbolism in Speak Lips and Mouth: Inability to speak after the rape. The ugliness of her mouth represents the ugliness and shame she feels inside as well as her inability to take care of herself. Pay attention to the connection of her lips towards the end of the novel!

12 Symbolism in Speak Mr. Freeman cutting his canvas in half (p. 92)  On the surface level he has ripped his painting, but what else does it represent?

13 Symbolism in Speak On the surface level, Melinda is just drawing trees. However, what do trees stand for or represent? Think about how trees connect to Melinda. Think about the process trees go through for each season.
