Monday April 1: Hand in your homework. 1. What do you think the earth is made of? Explain! You should have MORE THAN ONE idea! 2. Do you know what the 4 spheres are? If so, list them. DateTable of ContentsPage 4-1-134 Spheres

Earth Science and Weather!!!

This Week’s Objectives We will learn about the four “spheres,” or systems in our earth. We will learn how the spheres interact with each other. We will learn how we can see these spheres in our everyday lives.

For these notes, whatever is written in red, you write too.

1) The earth is mostly rock. 2) 75% of its surface is covered by a thin layer of water. 3) The entire planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gas. 4) The earth can support life. lithosphere hydrosphere atmosphere biosphere

The Four Spheres of Earth Lithosphere Greek word: litho = stone What is it?: Solid, rocky crust and mantle that covers earth Example: Volcanoes

The Four Spheres of Earth Lithosphere Hydrosphere Greek word: litho = stone What is it?: Solid, rocky crust and mantle that covers earth Example: Volcanoes Greek word: hydro= water What is it?: All the water on the earth Example: Pacific Ocean

The Four Spheres of Earth Lithosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere Greek word: litho = stone What is it?: Solid, rocky crust and mantle that covers earth Example: Volcanoes Greek word: hydro= water What is it?: All the water on the earth Example: Pacific Ocean Greek word: atmo = air What is it?: The layer of air (gas) that surrounds earth Example: Birds fly through the atmosphere

Glossary time! Add these words and their page numbers to your glossary. Biosphere Lithosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere

Review Activity I will read off a description of a sphere Your table has cards to show what sphere I’m describing L = lithosphere H= hydrosphere A = atmosphere B = biosphere I will give you 30 seconds to think about which sphere it belongs to When I say “show me,” each group will hold up its answers. Don’t reveal your answers early.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Nile River and I flow through North Africa.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Nile River and I flow through North Africa. I belong to the hydrosphere! Nile River is hydrosphere because it is water.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Mojave Desert, home to plants the Joshua Tree and cities like Las Vegas!

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Mojave Desert, home to plants the Joshua Tree and cities like Las Vegas! I belong to the biosphere! Mojave Desert is biosphere because of people, plants, and animals (life).

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Himalaya Mountain Range in Asia, home to Mount Everest!

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Himalaya Mountain Range in Asia, home to Mount Everest! I belong to the lithosphere! Himalaya Mt Range is lithosphere because of rocks.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am a place where satellites can orbit, bringing you TV from all over the world!

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am a place where satellites can orbit, bringing you TV from all over the world! I belong to the atmosphere! Space outside Earth is atmosphere because of gases.

Which sphere is this cloud a part of?

Which sphere do these rocks belong in?

Which sphere is this hot air balloon in?

Which sphere do these daffodils belong in?

The Four Spheres of the Earth Reading

Biosphere Comic Pick an organism (any kind of life-form) Examples: Mosquito, your little brother/sister, a pigeon Make a comic of how that organism interacts with our four spheres See example (next slide)

Sphere Comic Be sure to include each sphere (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) Use all six comic boxes—that means you will have to use some of the spheres more than once Use a combination of words and pictures Be sure to color your comic

Thurs April 4 or Friday April 5 Hand in your homework. 1. What is the atmosphere? 2. What do you think would happen if our earth did not have an atmosphere? 3. Why do YOU need the atmosphere? DateTable of ContentsPage 4-4-13 or 4-5-13 Atmosphere

Things you’ll need to know for your exit slip… Understand why the atmosphere is important for life on Earth Know what gases make up Earth’s atmosphere Understand the relationship between altitude and air density Understand where air pressure is highest and lowest and why

Remember, if a word is written in red, write it in your lab book. Atmosphere Notes!

Atmosphere questions What is the main gas in the atmosphere? What type of gas do we need? What type of gas do we release? What type of gas do plants release? What type of gas do plants need?

What Makes the Atmosphere? ~78% Nitrogen gas ~21% Oxygen gas Some aerosols (suspended liquids and solids)

Why is the atmosphere important? It helps living things SURVIVE! It gives oxygen for breathing. It traps heat for warmth. It protects Earth from radiation and meteors. It acts like earth’s bodyguard! 

What’s the difference between mass and weight? Mass This is the amount of matter in something Mass always stays the same Weight This is the measure of the force of gravity acting on an object Weight changes when gravity changes

Air pressure: Air Pressure is the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on the earth. Review: What extra “oomph” or measurement does weight have?

Altitude can change Altitude: how high you are from sea level If you hike up a mountain, your altitude increases

As you climb a mountain… Does the air pressure on you INCREASE or DECREASE? Thumbs UP = Increase Thumbs DOWN = Decrease Be prepared to share your answer! As you climb a mountain, air pressure decreases because there is less gravitational pull on air molecules.

Air pressure can change As altitude increases, the air pressure decreases. This is because there is less air above you to push down on you.

Think of it this way…

Air Pressure and Weather

High pressure areas are usually sunny High pressure = Low Pressure areas are usually cloudy/rainy Low pressure =

Air Pressure and Weather You're well familiar with our "H" and "L" designations on weather maps for areas of high and low pressure, but what do they mean in regards to what weather's coming? High pressure situations are generally associated with fair, sunny weather. As high pressure is an area of sinking air, and air tends to dry out as it sinks, leaving sunny skies. Low pressure areas are generally cloudy/rainy areas -- where strong areas of low pressure bring our stormiest weather. That's because it's an area of rising air, and as air rises, it condenses into clouds and rain. Air moves from higher pressure to lower pressure, so if you have a high and a low nearby, it can be windy as air rushes between the two. From: http://www.komonews.com/weather/faq/4347756.htmlhttp://www.komonews.com/weather/faq/4347756.html

Which states have sunny weather? Which states have rainy weather?

Density Review Density is the mass of a material in a given volume. Density = Mass/Volume Remember sinking and floating? Objects that are more dense sink. Objects that are less dense float. I’m less dense! I’m more dense!

Altitude and Density As you climb up a mountain… Does the air get MORE DENSE or LESS DENSE? Thumbs UP = More Dense Thumbs DOWN = Less Dense Be able to explain your answer. As you go up, the air gets less dense because objects with greater density sink and objects with less density rise to the top.

Altitude and Density As altitude increases, air density decreases. Remember, less air pressure = less forces pushing air particles together.

Layers of the atmosphere: Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere *Each layer has its own distinct characteristics: - Temperature - Composition Most weather happens here!

Bill Nye Atmosphere Video Before you watch the video, preview the questions on the quiz so you know what you’ll need to watch for. As you watch the video, answer the questions to the quiz.

Exit Slip Label your note card with your FIRST AND LAST NAME, DATE, and HOUR. Labeling this correctly is worth one point. First and Last NameDateHour 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Exit Slip Clear everything off of your table. Close lab books and put them on the floor. NO TALKING, at all. If you have a question raise your hand SILENTLY and wait for the teacher. If it is multiple choice, you can just write the letter of the answer.

Question 1 1. Why is the atmosphere important? a) It gives oxygen for breathing. b) It traps heat for warmth. c) It protects Earth from radiation and meteors. d) All of the above.

Question 2 2. According to this pie chart, which gas is the second most common in Earth’s atmosphere?

Question 3 3. Use the diagram to help fill in the blank. As altitude increases, air density ______________.

Question 4 4. Does Point A or Point B have more air pressure? EXPLAIN your answer. Point A Point B

Atmosphere Importance Homework This assignment is due on Monday. Make sure you have your homework done.
