Speed, Velocity, Displacement, Distance By Tammy Hsu and Viona Chung

Speed Speed is the distance covered in a unit of time How fast something moves It is a scalar quantity; it does not show direction, but shows magnitude of what distance taken at a given time To calculate speed, you divide distance over time.

Velocity Velocity is the rate of change of displacement with time It is a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction. To calculate velocity, you divide displacement over time.

Displacement Displacement is a vector measure of the interval between two locations measured along the shortest path connecting them. It is both the distance and direction an object moves. Displacement is a vector quantity because it has direction and magnitude. Displacement is a vector quantity because it has direction and magnitude.

Distance Distance is how far an object moves; total length of a path. Distance is a scalar quantity because it does not have direction, but only magnitude.

Slope of Graph x(t) =Velocity The slope of a graph is the velocity of the object, since velocity is defined as the change in position divided by the change in time. slope = rise / run slope = 30 m / 10 s slope = 3 m/s

Question 1 1) A group of bike riders took a 4.0 hour trip. During the first 3.0 hours, they traveled a total of 50 kilometers, but during the last hour they traveled only 10 kilometers. What was the group's average speed for the entire trip? Average Velocity = Distance/Time Average Velocity = Distance/Time Given: Distance = 50 km + 10km = 60km Time = 3 hr + 1hr = 4 hr Time = 3 hr + 1hr = 4 hr 60km/4hr = 15km/hr

Question 2 2) What is the average velocity of a car that travels 30 km due west in 0.5 hr? Average Velocity = Distance/Time Given: Distance = 30km Time = 0.5hr 30km/0.5hr = 60km/hr
