Water Works

Water  Your body is mostly (50 to 70 percent) water ~ depends on how old you are and how much muscle and fat you have ~muscle has more water then fat ~muscle has more water then fat ~the average male has more water because they have more muscle than the female body ~the average male has more water because they have more muscle than the female body ~a younger body has more muscle than an older one…therefore it has more water! ~a younger body has more muscle than an older one…therefore it has more water! ~without it, you will die in a matter of days! ~without it, you will die in a matter of days!

Water and your body  Water is a solvent…it dissolves other substances, carries nutrients and other material around the body  You need water to: ~digest food ~digest food ~carry waste products out ~carry waste products out ~provide a medium for biochemical reactions (metabolism) ~provide a medium for biochemical reactions (metabolism) ~send electronic messages b/w cells (muscle movement) ~send electronic messages b/w cells (muscle movement) ~regulate body temperature ~regulate body temperature ~lubricate your moving parts ~lubricate your moving parts Fluoride & Teeth? Fluoride combines with other minerals in teeth and makes the minerals less soluble…less cavities! Some drinking water is fluoridated naturally and it also may be added to water without it.

Getting the water you need  The body does not store water  Water is lost daily as you breathe, perspire, urinate & defecate  8-10 ounce glasses give you 2,400 milliliters…approx enough to replace what you lose  Water comes from the liquids you drink…although caffeine and alcohol are diuretics (chemicals which cause you to urinate frequently)…so they provide water but they also increase elimination  Water is in the food you eat ~lettuce is 90% water ~hamburger 50% ~cheese…the softer the cheese the higher the water content ~bagel 29%

Dehydration  Repeated vomiting or diarrhea  Exercising or working in a hot environment  High protein diet (extra water is needed to eliminate the nitrogen compounds in protein)  Certain medications  High blood pressure  If dangerously dehydrated, plain water will not replace electrolytes lost

Water is water. Or is it?  Hard water- water with lots of minerals…salty and may feel gritty…leaves a scum  Soft water- fewer minerals, from surface…clean  Distilled water- tap water that has been boiled until it turns to steam, then it is collected and condensed back (free)  Mineral water- spring water  Spring water- water from springs nearer the earth’s surface (cleaner taste than mineral)  Still water- water that flows to surface on own  Sparkling water- pushed up by gases
