We will be scrutinising the text focussing on the use of language, its purpose and effectt on the reader. Our in depth reading will feed in to our writing and spoken communication. Autumn Term will see us using The Buterfly Lion to write for different purposes. We will develop our narrative writing skills alongside writing character sketches, newspaper articles, film-scripts, interviews and letters. We begin the Autumn Term studying The Butterfly Lion before moving on to the famous ‘Charlotte’s Web’. In order to demonstrate comprehension skills across the curriculum and enhance vocabulary, we will participate in a variety of drama sessions including performing poetry. This will also be incorporated into daily classroom practice. We are looking to demonstrate understanding in different parts of speech; nouns, verbs and adjectives. Also, we are increasing our use of pronouns, phrases and direct speech. In history we will be travelling back to the time of the Anglo- Saxons to discover exactly who the early law makers were. This is a study of a significant theme in British History analysing developments in crime and punishment. We will then be asking the question. ‘Why were the Norman Castles definitely not bouncy? (Norman conquest). We will be reinforcing our knowledge of staying safe online, especially discussing modern technology such as Xbox, iPhone and Facebook. We will use iPad to capture and store our learning to then retrieve and present within a video. We will develop skills of algorithmic thinking through coding and programming. As part of the Liverpool Archdiocese we will be following the ‘Come and See’ Scheme of Work. We will be looking at; People, Confirmation, Hinduism and Gift (Advent). In order to enhance our creative capacity we will work on developing drawing, focussing particularly on use of lines, tone and texture. We will develop understanding of colour theory and harmony. We will keep fit through enhancing existing passing and ball control skills. This will be followed by developing the use of our bodies to express meaning through dance. We’re fortunate enough to receive specialist tuition as part of the Sefton Wider Opportunities agreement. We will initially practice the genre of Samba. * Visit from local MP, Bill Estersen *Activity Day at Liverpool Walker Art Gallery * Whole-school visit to Southport Pantomime We are looking to recognise the place value of each digit in a 4-digit number, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers up to and beyond 1000. We will recall multiplication facts up to x12. Columnar methods will be developed and used for subtraction and addition. We will compare, classify and identify symmetry in shapes. Year 4 will convert between units of measure; calculate perimeter; estimate, compare and calculate measures, including money in pounds and pence. We will work on counting in hundredths; solving problems with increasingly harder fractions and show common equivalent fractions. Time will be converted between analogue and digital 12- and 24- hour clocks. Throughout all areas we will be solving 1- and 2- step word problems. We will develop skills in moulding and shaping different materials. The children will design and create their own ‘Poppy’ in connection with Remembrance Day. They will be used within a class Collective Worship. Geographical skills will be taught throughout the Spring and Summer term which will be reinforced with a residential trip to London in May, 2015. We will then be answering the questions: ‘Why is London such a cool place to live?’ and ‘Where would you choose to build a city?’ Y4 At the beginning of the Autumn Term we will be studying Sound. States of Matter: How could we survive without water?
