Using WITSML to deliver value in BP Presentation to public meeting 16 th May 2007 Dr Julian Pickering, Domain Lead Drilling & Completions BP Research & Engineering, Sunbury-on-Thames, UK

e&pdct 2 BP’s WITSML data management vision Very strong focus on driving the marketplace to embrace the enhanced capabilities of WITSML – eg. plug & play of intelligent algorithms and tools. Develop a truly open environment for information exchange. Share data between BP and vendors/service providers, partners and regulatory/statutory reporting bodies. Single point data entry. –Pre-populate the Daily Report (DIMS/OpenWells) –Update designs with changes between BP and contractors –Maximise data entry automation

e&pdct 4 WITSML developments in BP BP has produced a draft Recommended Practice to define a standard Real-Time data architecture based on WITSML communications. This is currently in a consultation phase. The RP must satisfy all our stakeholders:- –D&C Function –Field Digital Infrastructure –Digital Security –Enterprise Architecture We are looking to standardise tools and processes on a global basis. Once approved, the Recommended Practice will form the basis for all future drilling contracts. The architecture has been adopted already in planned operations in Indonesia, Angola and UK North Sea. We need to consider how we might employ WITSML in our completions operations.

e&pdct 5 Problem areas where WITSML can make a difference PROBLEMACTION Reducing number of internal experts- The big crew change. We are losing people with many years experience through retirements and are filling positions with more junior staff. Greater use of collaboration technology and supporting operations remotely. WITSML standard communications can play a big role here. We are drilling in ever more challenging and hostile locations- There is not much “easy” oil production these days. We are dependent on new technology and work processes to operate in these areas. WITSML can facilitate enhanced remote decision making and a decrease in head count at the rigsite. Increased use of 3 rd party consultants operating from remote centres of expertise. It is difficult to maintain recruitment of the top level graduates into our industry- our industry is not seen to be so sexy these days, with growing expectations for high tech, environmental and innovation. All major suppliers and end user companies are competing for the same talent. There is no magic solution here but communications are fundamental to our business and the adoption of industry standards will allow us to focus more of our resources on the high level ground. We must place ever increasing emphasis on HSE- society is much less tolerant of accidents, emissions, spillages, etc. In short HSE must be the number one priority for all our operations. Using standards will allow us to adopt common best practice workflows and processes. This will help our HSE challenge.

e&pdct 6 Summary from the WITSML perspective A clear unambiguous WITSML standard is a must have to engage our stakeholders The standard must be stable and not evolve too quickly WITSML in itself does not deliver value but it is the vehicle to deliver very significant value Third party tools and smart processes must be plug and play We must all speak with the same voice
