Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy 1

During the 1990's, a former student of Bloom's, Lorin Anderson, led a new assembly which met for the purpose of updating the taxonomy, hoping to add relevance for 21st century students and teachers. Some of the changes were: The names of six major categories were changed from noun to verb forms. The top two levels were essentially exchanged from the Old to the New version. The knowledge category was replaced with the word remembering, comprehension became understanding and synthesis was renamed creating. 2

A look at the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy 3 Old Version New Version Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge Creating Evaluating Analysing Applying Understanding Remembering

Remembering The learner is able to recall, restate and remember learned information. When and where was Mahatma Gandhi born? Who were Mahatma Gandhi’s Parents? What was Gandhi’s educational qualifications? Name the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi. When was Gandhi assassinated and by whom? 4

Understanding The learner grasps the meaning of information by interpreting and translating what has been learned. Describe the incidences in Gandhi’s early life that influenced his views on freedom. In your own words rewrite Mahatma Gandhi’s views on equality and racism. Provide two examples of racisms experienced by Gandhi in south Africa. Explain the role of media in pre-independence India in propagating views of Gandhi. 5

Applying The learner makes use of information in a context different from the one in which it was learned. Interpret strategies employed by Gandhi to stop violence among people of India. How did Gandhi’s stay in south Africa influence his principles on Nationalism and ethnic violence? Predict the outcome of free India deviating from the teachings of Gandhi. 6

Analysing The learner breaks learned information into its parts to best understand that information. Analyze how Gandhi used the way he dressed to communicate with the Indian people. Compare Mahatma Gandhi to a present day leader. Compare and contrast Gandhi as saint and nation builder. Distinguish Gandhi’s view on freedom struggle with that of Chandrshekar Azad and Subashchandra Bose. 7

Evaluating The learner makes decisions based on in-depth reflection and assessment using appropriate criteria. (Support judgment with reason) How would you approve and disapprove that in the contemporary world Gandhi’s principles are global path maker of peace? Evaluate Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of free India and the present status of our country. 8

Creating The learner creates new ideas and information using what has been previously learned. Prepare a TV show for discussing the influence of principles of Gandhi in modern India. Prepare a plan for launching an organization/club that would address resolving everyday problems by non-violent methods. 9
