Discussion Issues for IIB Presented by Steve Browdy

GEO Label What it is –a data documentation mechanism –is a graphical representation of metadata completeness –is a representation of user experience 3 user studies to: –identify the informational aspects of geospatial datasets upon which users rely when assessing dataset quality and trustworthiness –elicit initial user views on the concept of a GEO label and its potential role as a solution to the stated problem –evaluate prototype label visualizations

GEO Label – what it looks like

GEO Label – what it means Producer profile: facet conveys availability of information about the producer of the dataset, e.g., organization or individual who produced the dataset, their contact information, etc. Lineage information: facet conveys availability of lineage/provenance information, e.g., processing applied to data and number of process steps. Producer comments: facet conveys availability of any informal comments about the dataset quality as provided by the dataset producer, e.g., any identified problems, suggested use, etc. Compliance with standards: facet conveys availability of information about dataset’s compliance with international standards, e.g., compliance with ISO 19115, Dublin Core, etc.

GEO Label – what it means Quality information: facet conveys availability of formal quality measures of the dataset, e.g., uncertainty measures recorded in UncertML, errors, accuracy information, etc. User feedback: facet conveys availability of feedback, comments and ratings provided by the users of the dataset, e.g., general comments on dataset quality, identified problems, suggested use for the dataset, etc. Expert reviews: facet conveys availability of domain experts’ comments on dataset quality, e.g., results of formal quality checks, expert suggestions on the dataset applications, etc. Citations information: facet conveys availability of citations where the dataset was used and cited, e.g., formal reports on dataset quality checks, journal articles, etc.

GEO Label How it is used –the GEO label can be created automatically by a web service. –it uses a RESTful API that allows sending a producer metadata URL and a user feedback items collection URL How it interoperates with the GCI –the GEO label service is able to retrieve metadata directly from the Discovery and Access Broker –the GEO label can be easily integrated into the GEOSS Web Portal Proof of concept –demonstrated in the GeoViQua project –live demonstration during the GEO-X Ministerial Week, utilizing test implementations of the DAB and GWP

GEO Label Support –STC (ST-09-02) proposed to establish a GEO label, "a label to recognize the scientific relevance, quality, acceptance and societal needs for activities in support of GEOSS.“ –Some support from ID-03, but not unanimous concerns about branding concerns about decisions on data documentation being taken out of the hands of data providers

GEO Label SIF Position –considers the methodology and principles used to design the GEO label appropriate and in line with the former Science and Technology Committee's initial aims –considers the GEO label an important contribution to enhance the user experience during data discovery –the SIF and 52North are willing to technically assist in the integration process The SIF, therefore, recommends that the GEO label be made operational in the GCI –some modifications may be deisrable See Nomination Letter

Use Metrics Collected from data providers and GCI: –provider name –Data resource accessed –date/time of access –specify which "tags" were associated with the data (geossDataCore, geossAttribution, etc.) –was a license involved and which one –was cost involved and how much –optional additional information
