G ANTT C HART

P ROGRESS Cooling Loads Specification of Lighting Research into materials Research into server room specifications Development of floor plan

L IGHTING O PTIONS CFL Lighting - Cheap - Lasts up to 10,000 hours - No flickering LED Lighting - Energy Efficient - Lasts up to 50,000 hours - Low heat emissions

LIGHTING LED smart lighting throughout the office area LED motion sensor lights in the sever room and toilets

C ONSTRUCTION R EQUIREMENTS Where possible, the materials used in construction should be: Recycled Sustainable Locally Sourced Low Embodied Energy Based on these requirements, timber and steel are both viable options.

MATERIALS Main structure to be made from recycled steel Timber cladding used in entrance and offices Glazing for aesthetic purposes

COOLING REQUIREMENTS Heat output from IT equipment, lighting and people = 5.76 MW Total cooling requirements will be calculated when we have made our final decision on aspects of the design Total cooling = 5.76 + solar heat gains – fabric losses – ventilation losses

H EATING AND C OOLING Air cooling and water cooling Heat recovery system extract heat from hot aisles Recycle waste heat for other parts of the building using a mechanical heat recovery system

H EATING AND C OOLING

R EQUIRED R OOMS Server room Network Operations Secure Entrance Backup room Uninterruptable Power Supply Generators Storage, testing and unloading space

B ACKUP P OWER With the need to maintain 99.98%+ uptime, backup power is the life support of a data centre Expected to run less than 200 hours/year, so Emergency Standby Power Rating used to select 3x 2MW Cummins Power Generation diesel generators will be used

I NITIAL P LAN C ONCEPT Design Issues Not good use of natural light from courtyard Small kitchen with odd angles Entrance not emphasized Poor circulation Space for equipment not estimated Server room faces south, inhabited areas face North

D EVELOPING T HE P LAN Improved but still incomplete Still needs UPS and Backup room and IT layout finalized
