4 What does it mean to persuade?  To convince someone to believe something using an argument or reasoning For your SOL persuasive essay, you will choose a side to argue and support based on the prompt provided. How to Brainstorm: The Persuasive Essay

5 What is it?  A gathering of ideas from your brain onto paper Why do we need it?  It is a great way to collect your thoughts.  It is very helpful for organization.  It ensures that only quality ideas are used in your writing. Brainstorming

6 The best way to begin brainstorming for a persuasive essay is by creating a T chart.

7 1.Write as many examples of support as you can think of for each side of the argument provided. 2.When you are finished writing all of your ideas down, go through what you have written and cross off anything that might weaken your argument or be difficult to support. 3.Look at what you have left. Which side of the argument will be easiest to write about based on what you have written on your chart? How to complete a T chart

8 Because of safety concerns, many states have increased the age at which teens can begin to drive. Your state legislature is considering raising the minimum driving age from 16 to 18. Do you think the minimum driving age should be raised? Take a position on this issue. Support your response with reasons and specific examples.
