1) Why do the infirm elderly and very sick need special love and care? Being sick for a long period of time and aging which takes time as well, plays heavily on the spirit as well as on the body. Can place us in a state of loneliness and depression

2) Was Jesus concerned about the infirm sick? Jesus from the beginning of His ministry had a special place in his heart for the infirm sick. Jesus called on his 12 disciples to share with them the power of healing and sent them out into the world to also heal. The letter of James informs the Christian community about the importance of prayer for the sick. Prayer will heal the sick and sins will be forgiven. Jesus healed people physically when he was here. Today, Jesus heals people sacramentally through the work of his disciples of today; the priests, bishops and pope.

3) Why is the Mass an ideal place for celebrating this sacrament? The Mass is ideal to celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick because it stresses that the celebration is not a private action involving only the priest and the sick person, but it is a communal action involving the whole Body of Christ.

How is it celebrated in a hospital setting? It follows a basic format in the hospital of: 1.Preparation – through prayerful instruction 2.Celebration – the anointing takes place 3.Conclusion – a prayer and blessing are given by the priest and loved ones

4) What if a person wants to celebrate Reconciliation and Anointing? Reconciliation should take place first before the Anointing of the Sick sacrament. First, an acknowledgement of sin is necessary before a state of healing can begin.

5) Under what condition(s) can this sacrament be given to: Non-Catholics : The church permits this if the person has been baptized, believes Jesus acts through the sacrament, and requests to receive it. Adults in a coma : If the church believes that the person would have requested it if they could.

6) Who should receive this sacrament? 1.Seriously ill 2.Seriously weakened by advanced aging 3.Scheduled for serious surgery 4.Suffering a relapse or new illness

Explain the 4 graces of the sacrament 1.Restores us to spiritual health 2.Frequent restoration to physical health 3.Special union with the suffering Jesus 4.Preparation for entry into eternal life

Finally, With this sacrament, the church offers those who are about to leave this life the Eucharist as viaticum (spiritual nourishment for the journey). This sacrament acts as a kind of preparation for eternal life and the Resurrection. Jesus said: “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day.”
