Instructions Review this presentation to learn the following: –What are WebQuests? –Who created the concept of WebQuest? –What are the main components? –What are some examples of WebQuests? USEFUL HINTS: –Use spacebar to advance slides; Backspace to reverse slides. –Use F5 key to view in full screen, Esc key to return to edit mode.

Exploring the World of WebQuests Sandy Schaufelberger, Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. Fort Wayne

Health Example This WebQuest is based on a high school Health project.

This WebQuest is designed for 4-5 th grade in Science.

Introduce Issues/Debate One of the most famous examples of a WebQuest… based on the controversy of cloning.

Problem-Solving Tasks There are examples in every subject and grade level.

Elementary literature- based example.

What is a WebQuest? An instructional project where: –Students use the Internet to solve a problem or answer an essential question –Based on a doable, engaging task –Supported by multiple resources –Learners create a product for an authentic audience –Students usually work in small groups

Who Created WebQuests? Bernie Dodge, et. al. San Diego State Univ. Outlined in 1995 “WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.” http://webquest.sdsu.edu/index-2007a.html

Why Use WebQuests? Authenticity Active exploration Applied learning Adult connections through collaboration Authentic assessment “Using information is more important than merely having it.”

Other WebQuest Traits Cooperative Learning Motivational Elements –role playing –simulated interaction –work scenario Interdisciplinary Differentiation Note the roles in this example.

Basic Components Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion Teacher Page WebQuest projects that follow the Bernie Dodge model will usually contain these seven basic components, or a variation of them. In fact, if you don’t see these sections when searching for a WebQuest, then keep looking. As you view the materials that follow, make sure you click on each example and investigate how the elements are used in the WebQuests. Your project for this class must contain all of the WebQuest components that you’ll be reviewing in this presentation, so spend time getting familiar with the components in actual examples.

Basic Components Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion Teacher Page

The Introduction Should orient the learner to what is coming Should create student interest –Does it sound fun? –Is the project important because of global implications? –Is it relevant to the learner’s past and/or future? –Is the site attractively designed? The Titanic (9-12) http://asterix.ednet.lsu.edu/~edtech/webquest/titanic.html http://asterix.ednet.lsu.edu/~edtech/webquest/titanic.html Building a Small Business (9-12) http://questgarden.com/10/62/5/070220121642/

The Task Should describe what the learner will have produced at the end –A PowerPoint presentation? –A timeline? –A newspaper? –A web site? –A videotape? –An interview? –A debate? –A radio play? 16 The Process The teacher suggests the steps that the learner should take to complete the task. The process may include strategies and advice. The process should be clear, concise. Scaffolding is used to guide learning. Art Exhibit!
