Believed land bridge sank, isolating Aborigines European Settlement 1770 Great Britain laid claim to Australia, Cpt. James Cook. Used as British prison 1787-1860’s primarily debtors prison (men, women, and children) Upon release, many stayed in Australia, LAND!!!!

3 Urban Rim vs. Outback Urban Rim 90% of Australia’s population lives within 100 miles of the ocean. Immigrants sought areas with mildest climates. National capital: Canberra- not Sydney Sydney, Perth, Brisbane etc. state capitals. Sydney is oldest and largest city, known for its harbor and opera house. The Outback A harsh wilderness region Gold Rush 1851 Australians and immigrants swarmed from cities. Outback minerals Coal, iron, copper, uranium, lead Gold Seekers stayed, built farms and sheep ranches. Ranches (stations) account for most of economic activity of the Outback.

6 New Zealand History  Original Inhabitants: the Maori –Believed to be Malaysian or Polynesian decent.  European settlement 1769 – Today Maori less then 10% of NZ population –Attempting to reclaim lands in effort to preserve culture.

10 Artic-Terms Crevasses- large cracks that form in glacial ice Ice Shelf- large glacial extensions that extend over the ocean Larsen Ice shelf Convergence Zone- cold water of Artic meets warmer ocean waters. Causing severe storms.
