Area Area is the amount of surface inside a closed boundary.

Area tells the number of square units. This rectangle’s area is 6 square units. Think: AREA, SQUAREA !

Area of a Rectangle 3 inches 5 inches Multiply the length times the width. L x W = AREA 3” x 5” = 15 square inches

The area of this square is 9 square units.

And…. the area of this rectangle is 12 square units.

You can find the area of your bedroom. Multiply the length x width. 9 feet 12 feet What is the area?

9’ x 12’ = 108 square feet

Area What is the area of this backyard? 60 yds. 200 yds.

60 x 200 = 1,200 square yards

Area of a Triangle 3 inches 6 inches A triangle is half the size of a rectangle so, multiply half of the length times the width. 1/2 x (base x height) = AREA 1/2 of (3 x 6) = 9 square inches

What is the area of this triangle? 10 yards 8 yards

1/2 of (8 x 10 ) = 40 square yards

Perimeter Perimeter is the distance around the outside edge of a shape.

Perimeter is measured in linear units. This rectangle’s perimeter is 20 inches 5 inches 10 inches

Think: ‘peri’ means around

Perimeter of a Rectangle 3 inches 5 inches Add the length and width, then multiply by 2. 2 x (L + W) = PERIMETER 2 x (5 + 3) = 16 inches 3 inches 5 inches 3 inches 5 inches 3 inches

What is the perimeter of this backyard? 20 yards 10 yards 20yards 10 yards

2 x (20 + 10) = 60 yards

What is the perimeter of this pool? 18 feet 10 feet

2 x (18 + 10) = 56 feet

Perimeter of a Triangle Add the measure of each side. 5 " + 5 " + 4 " = 14 yards 5 yards 4 yards

What is the perimeter of this triangle? 4 yards 3 yards 5 yards

3 + 4 + 5 = 12 yards
