6 “Focus on Five” Focus on the first 5 minutes Be in halls, smile, greet kids, be positive Continue to build relationships with kids Have a bell ringer –Reflection –Problem –Word of the Day –Question of the Day Learning targets – Student friendly

7 Look Fors Teacher greets students at the door (smile & engage) Evidence of procedures and routines – students on time Bell Work – Students begin working without direction Room arrangement – matches instructional strategy and student needs Essential Question – activates higher-order thinking Clear introduction by the teacher which ties together the previous lesson and today’s lesson Activating strategy – Word maps, KWL or other strategies that motivate students to want to answer the Essential Question (could be connected to Bell Work) Learning Targets – A good lesson starts with a clear learning target derived from the curriculum and is accompanied by an effort to stimulate student’s curiosity or existing knowledge about what is to be learned.
