31 Notes on the First Thanksgiving Pilgrims from England arrived at Plymouth Colony (Massachusetts) in December of 1620. They endured a very long, hard winter. Half of the group died from disease, exposure, and starvation. The Wampanoags, Native Americans in the area, helped the survivors make it through to the spring. The following fall, when the Pilgrims had finished bringing in their first crops, they decided to celebrate with the Native Americans and give thanks for the bountiful harvest.
