The base of the pyramid and Elite Sportistu piramīdas pamatne un virsotne

Finland Orienteering in top5 of all sports: 100.000+ different yearly participants, 350.000+ starts -Maps near to where people are (school, sprint, park). Also availability of maps. -Cooperation with schools: federation / clubs helping schools to organize sessions -Wide network of recreational orienteering events -OTHER factors: Jukolan viesti:, Teacher education, cooperation with Military Sweden Orienteering big sport, but mostly for insiders -Maps near schools and in cities = sprint maps -Celebrity endorsement and marketing as tough sport -Different projects Switzerland Orienteering a small, rather insider sport -School Orienteering: 5 years project with big financial support (Credit Swiss). Results not to visible in daily orienteering society  issue is how to involve non-orienteering families outside school. Denmark Orienteering a small sport – Elite driven -No effect on Elite success to participation – only media attention Estonia Orienteering a small sport, for orienteering families -All orienteers incl. Recreational in SI register  easier to follow how many have participated how many times, where and when. Federation maintains the register and marketing of the events -Othe´r recreational activities modest Adventure sport is both bringing and on the other hand eating orienteering participants Base of the pyramid Benchmarking and best practices

KEEP orienteering a sport for all e.g. Magnets events are excellent Elite success to be used for increasing mass participation and media interest! POTENTIAL ACTIONS Maps near to where people are. Also availability of maps (swimming halls, clubs, online for printing out) School maps Sprint maps Parks and city-near forests -Cooperation with schools: federation / clubs helping schools to organize sessions -Wide network of recreational orienteering events: federations role to collect, maintain and distributed a calendar. Also creates and maintains guidelines and tools  business model to be thought! -All orienteers to be registered incl. recreational for follow-up, marketing and information (benchmark Estonia) OTHER POSSIBLE ACTIONS -Develop Kapa 3-days: an event for all (suitable terrain, infrastructure), team event (doing together), wide national TV support from the beginning (first radio, then TV, now online and with a TV serie about celebrities preparing for Jukola and collecting charity) -Could Trail Running be adopted as an activity under LOF? -Teacher education (cooperation w universities) -Cooperation with military (“professional” soldier athletes?) Base of the pyramid Food for thought in Latvia

LOF training groups / national teams -Three groups with one coach for each: Elite, Seniors, Juniors -Possibility to create a training center in Riga to be investigated Other training groups (regional, military, school, clubs) -Youth / children activities organized regionally by clubs  coach / leader education needed -Possibilities with formal cooperation with Military to be investigated No major changes needed to -NT selection criteria and methods -Championship selection criteria and methods -WRE ranking can be used as part of selection criteria (indicative only) Elite training groups Optimal system for Latvia?

LOF treniņu grupas/ izlases komandas -3 grupas ar treneri katrai: elite, seniori, juniori -Iespēja izveidot treniņcentru Rīgā Citas treniņgrupas (reģionālās, militārās, skolas, klubi) -Klubu organizētas aktiviātes jauniešiem/ bērniem reģionos  nepieciešama treneru/ vadītāju izglītošana -Sadarbības iespējas ar militāristiem Lielas izmaiņas nav nepieciešamas: -Atlašu kritērijos un metodēs -Čempionātu izvēles kritērijos un metodēs -WRE rangu var izmantot kā daļu no atlašu kritērijiem (tikai kopskata veidošanai) Elites treniņgrupas Optimālā sistēma Latvijai?

Children and adult Recreational orienteers Finland Orienteering in top5 of all sports: 100.000+ different yearly participants, 350.000+ starts in recreational events KEY success factors: Maps near to where people are. Also availability of maps (swimming halls, clubs, online for printing out) School maps Sprint maps Parks and city-near forests Cooperation with schools: federation / clubs helping schools to organize sessions Wide network of recreational orienteering events: federations role to collect, maintain and distributed a calendar. Also creates and maintains guidelines and tools. Monetarization for federation an issue. OTHER factors: Jukolan viesti: an event for all (suitable terrain, infrastructure), team event (doing together), wide national TV support from the beginning (first radio, then TV, now online and with a TV serie about celebrities preparing for Jukola and collecting charity) Teacher education (cooperation w universities) Military education Sweden Orienteering big sport, but mostly for insiders KEY actions to promote participation Maps near schools and in cities = sprint maps Celebrity endorsement and marketing as tough sport Different projects: but orienteering family very (too?) closed for new starters Switzerland Orienteering a small, rather insider sport CASE Skool Orienteering 5 years project with big financial support (Credit Swiss – corporate social responsibility: compensation of ~300€/day for volunteering athletes who run the events + car use) Target 500 maps of 1:1000/1:2000 for schools –> outcome 1000+ maps (CS financed) 30x 1 day event (small races at schools) at 5 areas = 150 events / year One superevent with 202.000 children orienteering for one day Still ongoing Results not to visible in daily orienteering society  issue is how to involve non-orienteering families outside school. Must be easy to start with minimum requirement for equipment and travelling (map location and availability) No very effect on Elite success to mass participation Denmark Orienteering a small sport OTHER considerations An interesting area is orienteering with electronic map (e.g. Mobo in Estonia) - especially when combined with GPS tracking Could Trail Running be adopted as an activity under LOF – much new potential participants utilizing same “arena” = same mapping for Trail R / Orienteering / MBO /SkiO? Estonia All orienteers incl. Recreational in SI register  easier to follow how many have participated how many times, where and when Federation maintains the register and marketing of the events (by ~15 clubs, federation does not participate Othe´r recreational activities modest (no school, no military, no ”outsider” in EOF races, no media relationship) Adventure sport is both bringing and on the other hand eating orienteering participants MOBO (orienteering maps and courses for mobile phones) maps and course available widely Base of the pyramid Benchmarking and best practices
