Collab 5/26/06 #1 EDMEDM Martin Cooper, Los Alamos Co-spokesperson and Contract Project Manager for the EDM Project for presentation to The EDM Collaboration Pasadena, CA February 14, 2007 Collaboration Business

Collab 5/26/06 #2 EDMEDM Outline New institution vote The DOE CD-1 Reprise Review The CD-1 documents Continuing resolution Town Meeting for the Long Range Plan Publications Committee The next collaboration meeting

Collab 5/26/06 #3 EDMEDM Election of New Collaborating Institution Boston University Jim Miller, Lee Roberts et al. Electronics and computers Light collection Machine shop University of Maryland Betsy Beise, Herbert Breuer et al. Simulation and data analysis Electronics

Collab 5/26/06 #4 EDMEDM DOE CD-1 Reprise Review From the DOE: Jehanne Simon-Gillo, Wlodek Guryn, Gene Henry, Eugene Colton by telephone From the NSF: Brad Keister Technical Advisors: John Haines, Roy Holt, John Wilkerson by telephone From EDM: Martin Cooper, Paul Huffman, Doug Beck, Brad Filippone Institutional Managers: Jack Shlachter, Geoff Greene Agenda Response to the CD-1 Review ReportM. Cooper Risk Based R&D PlanM. Cooper Assembly Plan and CD-4 RequirementsP. Huffman Cost, Schedule and Management IssuesM. Cooper December 14, 2006

Collab 5/26/06 #5 EDMEDM Crucial Points to Agreement Project name is now nEDM R&D establishes technical feasibility prior to CD-2 NSF a major partner Cryogenic physicist at ORNL Delays to slow controls and beam guides CD-2 requirement on sensitivity – 30 x 10 –28 e·cm CD-4 completion requirements Cost $14.8 + $4.2 = $19M AY$ The CD-1 documents will be on the web once they are finalized

Collab 5/26/06 #6 EDMEDM CD-4 Requirements Distributed Completion Integrated Tests Cryogenic vessel installed at ORNL  Demonstrated to cool the central detector volume to 500 mK  Operated with the magnet coil package, central insert and 3 He services in place Central detector insert installed and cryogenically integrated at ORNL but the following requirements met at LANL  High voltage holds  5 kV/cm with a leakage current < 10 nA  Mean number of photoelectrons from 750 keV of energy deposition is  4  SQUID noise 1  Neutron storage time in similar cell demonstrated to be >100 sec in an independent test Magnet coil package installed and cryogenically integrated at ORNL  /B 0 < 10 -5 /cm at 77 K achieved at Caltech

Collab 5/26/06 #7 EDMEDM CD-4 Requirements Four-layer magnetic shield in storage at Caltech or ORNL  Shielding factor of 10 -4 achieved at Caltech The shields will be installed post project at a time when needed technically. Premature installation will endanger the shields and delay progress towards science because they would be a hindrance to other required operations. 3 He services installed and cryogenically integrated at ORNL but the following requirements met at LANL or Illinois  Produces  10 11 /cm 3 of  70%-polarized 3 He in the collection volume as seen with a SQUID  Purifier reduces the 3 He concentration to less than 1 part in 10 11  3 He demonstrated to move between volumes with a time constant of 500 sec  Valves shown to operate over 500 cycles Neutron guides installed at ORNL except for the final two meters  Flux out/MW  2x10 6 n/A/cm 2 /s/MW @ 8.9 Å with a polarization  70% An evaluation of the overall sensitivity to be better than 300 x 10 –28 e·cm

Collab 5/26/06 #8 EDMEDM Continuing Resolution Congress will either pass A continuing resolution A budget In either case, the likelihood is no new starts EDM construction is a new start Any more funds in FY’07 are likely OPC, i.e have limited but creative usage Have received $430k this year for R&D and the project office Of the remaining $870k+$110k, DOE may give ~$400k NSF might give $110k or more

Collab 5/26/06 #9 EDMEDM Town Meeting for the Long Range Plan Chicago, January 18-21, 2007 From “Fundamental Symmetries and Neutrino Physics” topical subfield, nEDM got essentially a stand alone recommendation in second place behind DUSEL Likely to result being mentioned as a new initiative in the executive summary of the long range plan Importance to the DOE is unclear Impressive and important to the NSF

Collab 5/26/06 #10 EDMEDM Publications Committee Upcoming conferences Are written conference proceedings treated the same as journal publications?

Collab 5/26/06 #11 EDMEDM The Next Collaboration Meeting At Los Alamos? May, June or when?
