1 The Specialization in Health Management for Older Adults: Contents and Dynamics Specialization Introductory Module 6 May 2013

2 Specialization Summary The Specialization in Health Management for Older Adults is a course to improve the competencies of current professionals in quality health management in Latin America and the Caribbean. This theoretical and empirical course was designed in partnership by: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) The Inter-American Center for Social Security Studies (CIESS) and The Latin American Academy of Medicine for Older Adults (ALMA)

3 Development of Competencies in 7 Areas 1.Analysis and Evaluation 2.Policy Management 3.Program and Service Planning 4.Communication and Cultural Competency 5.Community Work 6.Public Health 7.Senior Management and Leadership

4 All 7 of these competencies are gained through students’ participation in an introductory module followed by 6 online class modules. 5 Introductory Module: May 6-10, 2013 Barbados

6 Introductory Module Objectives: By the end of the Introductory Module you will: 1.Be familiar with the principal health management concepts upon which the Specialization is built 2.Be able to navigate the MOODLE platform 3.Engage in discussions on relevant topics and learn to present on these topics in groups 4.Understand how you can translate the knowledge gained in the Specialization into your career and life goals.

7 Introductory Module Agenda items include: 1.LECTURES: An introduction to various topics related to health management in aging. 2.TRAININGS: MOODLE platform and virtual campus navigation. 3.CASE STUDIES: Three different case studies that will be followed by group presentations. 4.WORKSHOPS: Presentations and activities relating to important management topics and the final project.

8 Introductory Module Use this time in the introductory module to ask questions about the MOODLE platform, get to know your group members and begin the learning process!

9 Module I – VI: May 13, 2013 – January 20, 2014 Virtual Classroom

10 Course Composition Each module is composed of several units. Use the unit guides posted under each module to receive instructions for your coursework. Each module unit varies in homework and activities and will include several of the following: lectures, readings, forums, quizzes and practical activities. The last unit of each module contains an evaluation activity. You are given four extra days before you start the next module to complete this activity.

11 Module I Aging and Society UnitTitleKnowledge 1Demography of Aging Understand key demographic indicators to assess the health status of the elderly and their impact on health systems. 2Epidemiology of Aging Know and interpret the main epidemiological indicators to assess the health status of the elderly and their impact on health systems. 3Society and AgingIdentify the influence of social determinants of health on health patterns of the elderly and the accessibility and equity of health services for them. Evaluation Unit: Health Situation Analysis

12 Module II Public Policy, Public Health and Health Programs UnitTitleKnowledge 1Aging and Health in Public Policy: Active Aging Framework Understand the essential functions of public health in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and services for older adults while utilizing an active aging framework. 2Public Health and Aging: The Human Rights Approach Study the principle contributions and social, political and legal barriers to the positioning of aging themes in policy strategies and identify effective public policies that promote the human rights of older adults in the region. 3Healthy Aging and the Environment: The Age Friendly Communities Project Recognize and implement policies and programs that utilize environments as tools in active and healthy aging. 13 Module III Health Service Management for Older Adults UnitTitleKnowledge 1Basics of Individual Aging Utilize the life course approach to aging in understanding the biological and psychological development of persons as they age. 2Older Persons as a Patient Recognize the heterogeneity of the aging process of individuals and varying determinants in aging. 3Chronic Care in Health Services Manage chronic disease care and the interaction between one’s chronic disease and their functional state. 4Disease Prevention for Older Adults Understand key prevention efforts in health for older adults. Evaluation Unit

14 Module IV Community Health Management for Older Adults UnitTitleKnowledge 1Health Promotion for Older Persons Assess risks to older adult health and safety and identify interventions and behaviors that promote physical and mental health, nutrition, function, safety. 2Principles of Community Health Program Development Design and implement community programs aimed at the prevention, rehabilitation and care of older adults while successfully incorporating all sectors involved in community health, wellness and quality of life of older adults. 3Evidence-Based Self- Care Programs for Older Adults Understand the theory, concepts and practices of self- care and identify evidence-based self –care programs on the community level. 4Continuous Coordination of Care Understand the various aspects of the referral process for services and care for older adults and how to oversee successful transitions of care. Evaluation Unit: RE-AIM for Program Planning

15 Module V Health Management for Complex Older Patients UnitTitleKnowledge 1The Burden of Multiple Chronic Disease, Frailty and Disability Manage chronic disease care and the interaction between one’s chronic disease and their functional state 2The Complex Older Patient Understand the various needs in care for older adults and address those needs through the integration of appropriate services. 3Acute Care for Older Persons Analyze the organization of hospital geriatric services and programs addressing the major health problems for older adults and that demonstrate a high level of quality and attention to patient safety. 4Long-Term CareKnow the definitions of various models of medium and long-term care programs and services and understand the characteristics of each program, criteria for admission, evaluation and standards of quality for best practices in care. Evaluation Unit: Quality Assessment

16 Module VI Final Project The final project consists of a proposal of an intervention for a management problem. The student will choose this management problem according to unresolved needs that he or she has identified in the environment in which they work. Start now!
