Outline What is Pollution Sources Effects Detection Solutions
3
What is water pollution? A large set of adverse effects upon water bodies caused by human activity. Places that have water pollution: lakes, rivers, groundwater and the ocean.
4
Some Facts… Humans and other farmed organisms produce bodily wastes which enters rivers, lakes and oceans and other surface waters. The wastes can increase the concentration of bacteria and viruses.
5
What are the point sources? Are directly attributable to one influence. Nutrient waste travels directly from source to water. Point sources are relatively easy to regulate. Examples: Factories that have waste discharge pipes directly leading into a water body.
6
What are the nonpoint sources? Known as 'diffuse' or 'runoff' pollution. Are difficult to regulate and usually vary spatially and temporally. Known as 'diffuse' or 'runoff' pollution. Are difficult to regulate and usually vary spatially and temporally. Acid Rain… Clouds…
7
Examples of water pollution: Industrial affluents- water is discharged from after having been used in production processes. Sewage Disposal and Domestic Wastes- sewage and domestic and farm wastes are often allowed to pollute rivers and dams. Mining and Agricultural Wastes- mines are responsible for large quantities of acid water. Sulfates and nitrates from fertilizers runoff into water causing Eutrophication
8
What is Eutrophication? The enrichment of an ecosystem with chemical nutrients. Nutrients are nitrates and phosphates from fertilizer. Can cause health problems for humans by interfering with drinking water treatment. Dead fish…
9
How do we detect water pollution? They are detected in laboratories. Small samples of water are analyzed for different contaminants. Laboratories also use computer models to determine what dangers there can be in certain waters.
