2 Millenium Goal 6 Region of Focus: India Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

3 Target Goals Target A: Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 Target B: Achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment by 2010 Target C: Halt and begin to reverse the transmission of malaria and other major diseases

4 Groups Impacted by HIV/AIDS in India India has highest population living with HIV/AIDS under Sub Saharan Africa 2.4 million of population 83% in age group between 15 and 49 Industrialized south, west, and northeast High Risk Population Performers of unprotected heterosexual intercourse, Sex workers and their clients

5 Groups Impacted by Malaria in India Of 2.5 million cases in Southeast Asia, 76% come from India alone Seen most common in males

6 Other Diseases Prevalent in India Leading cause of death in India is heart disease Genetic Mutation affecting 1 in 25 Indians Unhealthy habits Tuberculosis Urban Areas 2.2 million Hepatitis A, E, and Typhoid Fever interfere with liver functioning

7 Progression Towards Our Goal Strengthening rural health care Increase education, especially about the diseases and their effects Increase in education about safe sex practices

8 HIV/AIDS POSITIVE: New HIV infections fell by approximately 40 percent between 2000 and 2013. NEGATIVE: Globally, an estimated 35 million people were still living with HIV in 2013.

9 Malaria and Other Diseases Between 2000 and 2015, there was a 58 percent decline in malaria mortality rates. Tuberculosis prevention and treatment have saved around 37 million lives between 2000 and 2013. Increase in use of treated bed nets to reduce malaria infections.
