11/5/13 50th Day of School Learning goal (7.L.1): I will be able to describe the characteristics of Euglena. Due Today: Characteristics of Life foldable Evening Assignment: Finish Euglena part of chart
2
Do Now On the slip of paper, write the eight characteristics of life shared by all living things? http://vimeo.com/15407847
3
What characteristics do all living things share? All living things… Are organized (cells, structures) Reproduce (pass on genetic material) Use energy Grow & develop Remove waste Regulate Internal Conditions (homeostasis) Respond to the environment Evolve and Adapt http://becklespinax.blogspot.com/ Characteristics of Life
4
Life Functions of single-celled Organisms As you watch note what role each of the following plays in the life of unicellular organisms: Nucleus Flagella Cilia Pseudopod Cytoplasm Vacuole Cell membrane Mitochondria Chloroplasts
5
Make a Characteristics of Life foldable On the OUTSIDE flap use the red as headings Organized Reproduce Use energy Grow and develop Remove waste Regulate Internal Conditions Respond to environment Evolve and Adapt Characteristics of Life Foldable On the INSIDE flaps 1)Explain the heading in your own words 2)Give an example of a specific organisms and that characteristic Resources: Textbook pages C9-11, C20-24, C27-31 http://infohost.nmt.edu/~klathrop/7characterisitcs_of_life.htm http://www.ck12.org/biology/Characteristics-of-Life/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life http://library.thinkquest.org/C003763/pdf/origin06.pdf

4 Vocabulary Flashcards Cell 1.Cell 2.Autotroph 3.Photosynthesis 4.Heterotroph On the FRONT Definition: A cell is the basic unit of life that is able to perform basic life functions. Examples: Euglena: single-celled organism Red blood cell: cell in human body that carries oxygen On the BACK
7
Example Characteristics of Life Foldable Outside Flap All life is Organized Inside Flaps Living things are organized into structures (cells, organelles, tissues, etc.) that perform life functions. _____________________ For example, humans are made up of many cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that help us use energy, remove waste, respond to the environment, and reproduce.
8
Euglena Organization: Single- celled, flagellate algae with a red eye spot Respond to Environment: Single flagella allows it to move toward food or away from predators Energy Use: Autotroph- makes it’s own food like plants; Heterotroph- eats other organism Evolve/Adapt: When water is scarce, forms a cyst
9
Euglena Feeding & Waste removal Autotroph (makes it’s own food) Sense light using red eyespot Move toward light with flagella Chloroplasts -> photosynthesis Can also feed heterotrophically by engulfing food Waste is removed by the vacuole
10
Euglena Reproduction Asexual reproduction only Through binary fission One organism splits into two genetically identical organisms
11
