3 WHAT IS IT???  Flickr is a image hosting and video hosting website where anyone can upload and tag photos, browse other people’s photos, add comments and annotations, and share images & videos.  Flickr was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and acquired by Yahoo! in 2005.  Since its launch in February 2004, Flickr embodies what is now known as Web 2.0 technology. The site provides the tools, but the value derives from the contributions of the user community—photos, comments, ratings, and organization.  Users can create photo sets and collections to manage content, and participate in topical groups to cultivate a sense of community.

4 Flickr & Learning…  Flickr offers an opportunity for students studying photography or other art-related subjects to receive feedback and engage with a community of experts and amateurs.  Students who are engaged with content demonstrate better learning outcomes, and the closeness of visual media facilitates that sense of connection to subject material.

5 Flickr Features…  Flickr Features includes: -Upload photos and videos. -Label photos with titles, descriptions and tags/keywords. -Organize pictures by creating sets and collections. -Connect and share images with family, friends and other contacts. -Create, search for and join groups. -Geotag/place photos on a world map. -Edit images in Flickr via Picnik. -Add notes/annotations to photos. -Provide feedback/comments on photos. -Create and share a photo slideshow. -Order prints, make a photo book, print a calendar, send a photo card, create a collage via Snapfish. -Explore interesting photos on Flickr. -Additional features in FlickrPro (e.g. unlimited uploads and storage, photo statistics, ad-free browsing/sharing and more).

6 Flickr in Education  Flickr can be used in several educational settings.  Some academic uses include: -Digital storytelling -Geography lessons -Group projects and assignments -Image analysis and writing -Virtual field trips -Virtual student art gallery/electronic portfolio

7 Flickr in Business  Businesses and corporations have also found Flickr to be a useful resource. Although Flickr is intended primarily for personal use, several businesses have created accounts in an effort to reach out to their customers.  Examples of corporate/business use of Flickr include: -Marketing products and future concepts -Behind the scenes/personal look at a company -Press/media related items -Portfolio of work and projects -Suggestions/additional information for customers (e.g. recipes)
