Curriculum Planning in NSS Chemistry Experience Sharing Chu Suk Ching Seconded Teacher Science Education, CDI 13 Nov., 2009

Few years ago … Started to plan Nowadays … Continue to face challenges with Support and Confidence

A Collaborative Task School Administration Panel Head ’ s decision Colleagues ’ opinions

Arrangement of NSS Elective Subjects

Aims and Objectives of Science Education Aims & Objectives Knowledge and Understanding Skills and Process Values and Attitudes

NSS Curriculum Content : Chemistry Compulsory partElective part (any 2) 1. Planet earth 2. Microscopic world I 3. Metals 4. Acids and bases 5. Fossil fuels 6. Microscopic world II 7. Redox, chemical cell, electrolysis 8. Chemical reaction and Energy 9. Rate of reaction 10. Chemical equilibrium 11. Carbon compound 12. Chemical patterns 1.Industrial chemistry 2.Materials chemistry 3. Analytical chemistry

Teaching Sequence Consider: * Chemistry Combined Science (Chem part) * Textbook (Chapter arrangement) * Choice of electives (Continuity between compulsory and elective part) * Ss ’ cognitive development and knowledge building sequence * Other limitations (e.g. equipment, technicians, etc.)

Selection of elective parts in NSS curriculum Elective part (any 2) 1.Industrial chemistry 2.Materials chemistry 3. Analytical chemistry

Staff development of colleagues Attending seminars /workshops related to NSS organized by EDB or universities Acquiring more information actively, e.g. from EDB website, sharing from teachers … Co-planning and preparation of teaching materials (e.g. textbooks, handouts, expt worksheets … )

Promotion Introduction to parents in Parents Day Promotion activities for F.3 students, esp. Targeted market ! Understand more the abilities of students

Interfacing with Junior Secondary Science Project Learning by Liberal Studies & F2 Integrated Science  prepare practical skills, scientific process skills & communication skills  SBA Investigative Study Update the curriculum and materials for F3 Chemistry in order to implement some parts of NSS curriculum. Integrate and bridge with the curriculum of the junior Integrated Science in order to reinforce the important parts for NSS and minimize the overlapped parts.

Preparing SBA - Investigative Study Reinforce the existing implementation of inquiry-based experiment (IBE) in F3 Reinforce the existing implementation of investigative practical project in F4 Manipulative Skills Manipulative Skills Scientific Process Skill Design, Predict, Perform, Observe, Measure, Draw conclusion … )Scientific Process Skill (Design, Predict, Perform, Observe, Measure, Draw conclusion … ) Communication SkillsCommunication Skills (writing lab report, oral presentation … )

Preparing SBA - Non-practical Tasks poster presentation in F3

Preparing SBA - Non-practical Tasks Reading & Writing in F3, F4

Enhancing higher-order thinking skills School Major Concern e.g. concept map, graphic organizers, open-ended questioning.

Catering for learners ’ diversity Chemistry (1X) – students with higher learning abilities Combined Chem ( ½ X) – students with lower learning abilities

Catering for learners ’ diversity Possible arrangements adopted: For 1X Chemistry –Complete the entire curriculum but focus more on the less demanding sub- topics –Focus more on the compulsory part and put less emphasis in the elective part
