3. Indirect Objects  The indirect object is the secondary receiver of the action in a sentence. For example: Justin gave his girlfriend a diamond ring.  Subject: Justin  Verb: gave  Direct Object: ring

He gave a diamond ring to his girlfriend. “ Girlfriend ” is the indirect object of this sentence.  “ Girlfriend ” cannot be the direct object of the sentence because Justin did not give his girlfriend. 6. Three Important Things To Remember About Indirect Objects  #1: The indirect object cannot exist without a direct object. For example: We gave him the bicycle. We gave him.  Without the indirect object, the original sentence ’ s meaning is changed.

Without a primary receiver of the action, you cannot have a secondary receiver.

In the second sentence, “ them ” is no longer an indirect object because it is part of a prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrases are never direct or indirect objects.
