Safety on Call HAND PROTECTION

Safety on Call QUESTION: What would be the best way to eliminate hand related injuries? – Engineer out the hazard – Provide PPE to the employee – Use really big tongs

Safety on Call ANSWER: First try to engineer out the hazard. If all engineering measures are not realistic then provide PPE to the affected employee. – Gloves – Barrier creams Other ways – Tools – Guards

Safety on Call 138(A) - GENERAL OSHA REQUIREMENTS Employers shall select and require employees to use appropriate hand protection when employees' hands are exposed to hazards such as those from: – Severe cuts or lacerations – Skin absorption of hazardous chemicals – Severe abrasions – Punctures – Chemical or thermal burns – Harmful temperature extremes

Safety on Call 138(B) - SELECTION OF HAND PROTECTION Employers shall base selection on an evaluation of performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to: – Task(s) to be performed – Conditions present – Duration of use – Hazards and potential hazards identified

Safety on Call NAME SOME OF THE JOBS HERE WHERE HAND DANGERS EXIST?

Safety on Call SELECTION GUIDELINES FOR HAND PROTECTION Factors for glove selection: – May be more cost effective to regularly change cheaper gloves than reusing more expensive types. – Work activities of employees should be studied to determine: Degree of dexterity required. Duration, frequency and degree of exposure of the hazard. Physical stresses that will be applied.

Safety on Call SELECTION GUIDELINES FOR HAND PROTECTION (CONTINUED) Factors related to gloves for chemical hazards: – Toxic properties of the chemical(s) must be determined. – Generally, any "chemical resistant" glove can be used for dry powders. – For mixtures and formulated products, a glove should be selected on the basis of the chemical component with the shortest breakthrough time. – Employees must be able to remove gloves so as to prevent skin contamination.

Safety on Call LET’S SUMMARIZE Think of ways to engineer out the hazard. Each job has hand hazards. Select the proper PPE for the job. Ask questions if the situation “feels” wrong. Do not use gloves around rotating machines. Watch out for pinch points, blades, heat. Etc. Think of all the things you use your hands for EVERY DAY!
