4 How Do I Find Internal Internship Opportunities? Talk to your professors about their research. Go to the department website, search for faculty and their research. Go to the Student Expo, April 14. 4

5 Tips for Internal Internships Ask if you will be paid. Ask if you will be paid. o Many faculty will only pay after the 1 st semester. o Some will only offer summer internships if you also commit to working in the Fall. Ask how many hours are you expected to work. Ask how many hours are you expected to work. o Typically the minimum is 10 hours per week during the academic year. 5

6 Tips for Internal Internships Talk with other students in the lab. Talk with other students in the lab. o See if the environment is right for you. Make sure you discuss your expectations with your faculty mentor. 6

28 28 Personal Statement explains: o How you decided what you want to do (point A) o Your career path (point B) o How you have proactively gained expertise to take you from point A to point B.

29 29 Always follow the guidelines. For this essay, ask yourself: “what skills do I need to be successful?” Technical skills – cite: o Special/advanced classes o Research o Internships o Job experiences Soft skills, e.g., o Communication o Leadership o Teamwork

30 30 For each experience, state:  What did you do? o include a context to when e.g., “as a freshman, I” o and duration “for 40 hours during fall semester”  What did you achieve?  How did it benefit others?  How did it benefit you? (skills/insights learned)

31 31 Include specific examples of any research and/or professional activities in which you have participated. Consider stating:  Objectives of the project o for quantitative research: hypothesis; o for qualitative research: research questions; o for other experiences: mission/goal  Timeline o duration and chronology during UG or G career  Your Role: (leader, team member)  Methodology (scientific language, but no jargon!)

32 32  How did your research further the knowledge in your field?  Skills Gained/Lessons/Learned?  Reference your publications/presentations/significant fellowships/grants.  Broader Impacts: How did research or other experience benefit society?

33 33 Always follow the guidelines.  Typically, recommenders should use letterhead and include the following information: Name Title of reference writer Department Institution or organization Include details explaining:  the nature of the relationship to the applicant;  statements about the applicant's academic, research and workforce potential

34 34 Always follow the guidelines. If the program allows you to use non-official transcripts, then you can use a DARS. BUT make sure the DARS is complete. I prefer to request a copy of an official transcript, scan it and upload it.
