2 THE HEXAGON

3 EXTENDED ESSAY IS: Compulsory for all Diploma Programme students A piece of independent research/investigation on a topic chosen by the student in cooperation with a supervisor in the school Externally assessed (max. 3 points together with TOK Essay)

4 Extended Essay and TOK Matrix (if the total score is not 28 or more, E in one of them is a failing condition; in both of them – failing)

5 THE MAIN AIMS OF THE EXTENDED ESSAY: Pursue independent research on a focused topic Develop research and communication skills Develop the skills of creative and critical thinking Engage in a systematic process of research appropriate to the subject Experience the excitement of intellectual discovery.

6 EXTENDED ESSAY IS: Approved DP subjects Formal piece of writing, in max. 4,000 words 40 hours work (Student), 3 – 10 (Teacher) Concluded with a short interview, or viva voce

7 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 1. RESEARCH QUESTION 2. INTRODUCTION 3. INVESTIGTION

8 FACTS Present extended essay in a format appropriate to the subject, acknowledging sources in one of the established academic ways Use the terminology and language appropriate to the subject with skill and understanding Apply analytical and evaluative skills appropriate to the subject, with an understanding of the implications and the context of their research.

9 BEFORE YOU START Decide on at least 2 subjects/ topics that you are interested in/ good at Read previous essays to identify strengths and possible pitfalls Plan how, when and where you will find material for your essay Plan a schedule for both researching and writing the essay, including extra time for delays and unforeseen problems

10 Phase 1: RESEARCH Plan how, when and where you will find the material for your essay Talk to the subject teachers (ask questions) Find the resources: 1. Book 2. Research paper 3. one Internet article

11 TIME OUTLINE PART 1: April(General Introduction) PART 2: 1.6. 2014(EE CONTRACT) Research Citation PART 3: June: FINAL CHOICE, RQ PART 4: June: FIRST DRAFT: 16. 6. 2014 PART 5: DEADLINE: January 2015 - Vloga : only for the students with a reason (medical problems, competitions, teacher being absent from school for a longer period of time etc.)

12 PART 2: PLANNING Read the assessment criteria Start work early and stick to deadlines Maintain a good working relationship with your supervisor Gather and ‘interpret material’ from sources appropriate to the research question Spend time working on the research question Work out a structure of the essay

14 RESEARCH Think very carefully about the research question Plan how, when and where you will find material for your essay Plan a schedule for both researching and writing the essay, including extra time for delays and unforeseen problems

15 RESEARCH Construct an argument that relates to the research question Have a clear structure for the essay itself before beginning to write (drafting system) Record sources as you go along (rather than trying to reconstruct a list at the end)

16 ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS Choose a new topic and a research question that can be answered if there is a problem with the original topic Use the appropriate language for the subject Show your interest and enthusiasm

17 PART 4: IN THE END Write the introduction and abstract Check and proofread the final version carefully Peer reading Tick the EE check list with your supervisor
