In our lives and in MATH, we need to do things in a certain order to make sure they turn out right. That is where the ORDER OF OPERATIONS come into play!

Order of Operations Definition The order of operations are a specific set of steps to follow in multi-step problems to ensure that everyone gets the same final answer.

#1 Four Rules for Order of Operations 1. Perform calculations inside parentheses first 2. Solve Exponents 3. Perform all multiplication & division from left to right… Example: 1 x 6 ÷ 2 (multiply 1 x 6 THEN divide your answer by 2) 10 ÷ 5 x 3 ( divide 10 by 5 THEN multiply your answer by 3) 4. Perform all addition and subtraction from left to right Example: 10 + 5 – 3 (add 10 plus 5 THEN subtract three from your answer) 5 – 3 + 10 ( subtract 3 from 5 then add 10 to your answer)

Add + Subtract - Multiply x Divide ÷ Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally P E MDMD ASAS Parentheses ( ) Exponents 4 3

#4 IMPORTANT!! ALWAYS UNDERLINE the portion of the problem you are solving and BRING DOWN the remaining parts of the problem! Your problem should look like an upside down triangle!!

Slide #5 10 + (5 – 3) x 5 Step #1 Do you have any ( )? If so evaluate what’s inside FIRST? Step #2 Do you have any exponents {e 2 }? If so evaluate. Step #3 Do you have any multiplication OR division? If so evaluate from left to right. Step #4 Do you have any addition OR subtraction? If so evaluate from left to right? ***EACH TIME YOU COMPLETE A STEP BRING DOWN THE REMAINING PARTS OF THE PROBLEM!!!***

Slide #6 11 + (15 - 10) x 2 Step #1 Do you have any ( )? If so evaluate what’s inside FIRST? Step #2 Do you have any exponents {e 2 }? If so evaluate. Step #3 Do you have any multiplication OR division? If so evaluate from left to right. Step #4 Do you have any addition OR subtraction?
