2 Social Entrepreneurship in The USA  The term Social Entrepreneurship is fairly new in the US but the history is significant.  Social Entrepreneurship involves efforts to solve social problems through entrepreneurial approaches.  Entrepreneurship is a “mindset” that pursues opportunity through innovative approaches, entrepreneurial determination and scalable strategies.  The Channeling of Innovation and Creativity to generate Value in Communities – Economic, Social and Intellectual Value  Benjamin Franklin, Susan B. 3 Significant Changes in the US Related to Non-Profits  Non-Profit Organizations Increased Rapidly Post WWII  Tax Laws in the US Favorable to Charitable Organizations  Many Foundations Formed from Successful Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders – Kauffman – Gates  Corporate Social Responsibility Increasing  Fierce Competition Between Non-Profits for Donations  Economic Downturn Created More Pressure (reduced government programs)  Entrepreneurial Models Proved Very Successful  Non-Profits Now Pursuing Entrepreneurial Approaches (earned income)  Entrepreneurship Education Searching for Best Models

4 Summary of Social Entrepreneurship Education in the USA  Social Entrepreneurship Curriculum is Expanding at a Rapid Rate  The Main Reason is Demand from Students seeking careers with Purpose and Meaning  University Leaders (Deans, Dept. Chairs) are interested in faculty who are Certified to teach Social Entrepreneurship  University Professors are interested in Content Ready curriculum that is High Quality and reduces course development time  The Majority of Non-Profit Organizations in the US are seeking sustainability models based on a Revenue Model (Earned Income)  Social Entrepreneurship combines the best of Entrepreneurship and Social Good

6 Social Entrepreneurship Fastest Growing Area in Entrepreneurship in American Colleges and Universities  USASBE Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship – Launched in 2012  Two Main Tracks – Teaching Certificate and Social Venture Certificate  Teaching Certificate – Requires a Syllabus to Complete  Social Venture – Requires a Business Plan for a Social Venture  Majority of Certificate Completions are Faculty Interested in Creating a Social Entrepreneurship Course

9 Benefits  Benefits Include:  Eight workshops taught by top faculty in the field  Access to ALL content in the modules including; PowerPoint's, Cases, Teaching Strategies, Experiential Learning options, Syllabi and other class activities  Free Registration to the Midwest Symposium on Social Entrepreneurship (KC) and GWU annual Entrepreneurship Conference (DC)  Letter of Accomplishment to Deans, Department Chairs and other Officials at Participants University  On-going access to Certificate Content and a Network of Social Entrepreneurs and Educators

10 Certificate Status To Date  Participants enter the process in groups (cohorts)  Cohort #7 Started at GWU in October with 11 participants  75 participants have signed up for the program – 60 have completed the certificate  58 completed with a Teaching Certificate 2 with Business Ventures  An Estimated 3,000 Students per year take SE courses offered by Certificate Graduates
