and Dorset Coast.

Upland National Park Areas (Cairngorms) Use the Aviemore OS Map to identify these land uses. 1.Tourism: People attracted by beautiful scenery(angels peak) and take part in hillwalking and sight seeing( The cairngorm funicular railway attracts many thousands of tourists to view the spectacular scenery from ptarmigan top station). In the Cairngorms tourism can be all year due to wintersports in places like Aviemore (north facing slopes hold snow for much of the year i.e. corrie cas). Watersports can also take place on ribbon lakes all year round e.g. Loch Morlich. Upper courses of rivers can be used for white water rafting. Birdwatchers are also attracted to view rare birds such as the golden eagle and the osprey. 2.H.E.P: Corries provide natural reservoirs with dams built. These areas have high levels of rainfall and steep slope for the momentum required to turn the turbines efficiently. Reservoirs can also be used to supply drinking water.

3. Mining: There are many quarries in the area mining granite which creates local jobs and generates income. 4. Hill sheep farming: Land which is unsuitable for modern farming techniques as it is too high up and the land is too steep can be used for sheep farming as they can handle the harsh conditions. 5. Commercial Forestry: Land which is also too poor for crops can be used for coniferous trees as they grow quickly in cold conditions and poor soils.

The Dorset Coast Use an OS Map of a Coastal area to Identify land uses. 1. Tourism: Beautiful coastal scenery (old harry) attracts tourists who will generate income and create jobs. Beaches such as Sandbanks attract tourists to lie in the sun or play on the beach and has recently been awarded E.U green flag status. Some more active tourists do hillwalking or sailing in the sheltered waters (Lulworth Cove). There is also watersports in Poole harbour. Sand dunes attract recreational walkers. Bird watchers are attracted to see waterfowl around Poole harbour. Jobs are created by people staying in hotels and B &B’s and from local gift/craft shops. 2. Wind farms: Strong winds around the coast can be used to generate clean, sustainable electricity. Many of which are off-shore. 3. Chemical Industries: Many chemical industries have located around the Dorset coast as the coastal location provides a good supply of water needed in the production process and allows them easily to import and export their goods. 4. Mining: Local chalk and limestone are mined which generates income and creates jobs.

Advantages/benefits of New Developments for local people Use OS Maps to identify map evidence that would support these benefits.  Money made from tourists for the local economy Local shops selling gifts and souvenirs, cafes, restaurants, catering  Income from tourist accommodation (B&B, campsites, caravan parks, chalets, log cabins sometimes part of converted farm buildings such as barns).  Local farm produce sold in farms or craft shops at premium price.  Increased employment, both part time and permanent although most jobs are seasonal.  Improved services/facilities for tourists can be used by the local community all year round e.g. bus services, pubs, improved roads, health clubs, hotels etc.  Visitors paying admission to get into museums or other facilities e.g. farm museums.  Also helps to reduce depopulation  People are made aware of conservation issues by visiting the parks. Again use OS Maps to identify problems using map evidence for all conflicts.

 Use of minibus and park and ride schemes to honeypot sites.  One way system within the honey pot  Build alternative routes around congested towns/villages  The streets have double yellow lines to prevent parked cars blocking roads.  Encourage the use of public transport. Aviemore has a train station. However, most visitors prefer to still bring their cars. Traffic congestion especially at peak times (Bank Holidays etc.) at honeypots. As well as interfering with businesses and locals’ way of life this causes air and noise pollution. Parking on grass verges damages the landscape (The A9 into Aviemore and the A548 into Poole Harbour become severely congested)  Advertise and promote other attractive but less popular site to reduce pressure on the honeypots and to spread the visitors around the park eg The Lecht for Skiing. .Weymouth in Dorset. Unfortunately, these site are now becoming too busy. 1.Noise pollution caused by cars can disturb locals and wildlife in places like Aviemore or Poole harbour. Solutions to these problems Problems caused by tourists

Increase in holiday homeownership pushes up prices meaning locals can’t afford them and have to move away.  Provide cheap council housing for locals. As so many were sold be the locals the Government has passed a law to prevent people buying their council house. Unsightly visitor centres and leisure complexes.  Screen facilities behind trees or underground.  Use local materials to blend in with local surroundings. Very successful as few of these faculties are considered visually unattractive or obtrusive.

 More designated areas where people can stop making litter collection easier  Ensuring bins are available and easily collected. Bins can be so full they over flow due to the huge numbers. Litter dropped by tourists leads to visual pollution and death of animals  Limit speed and the number of speedboats on busy lochs/lakes and encourage sailing. They have also restricted the area which is used for water sports. Speed Boats on Loch Morlich (upland area) or Lulworth Cove (coastal area) annoys locals and the wake from the boat damages the sides of the loch morlich Solutions to these problems Problems caused by tourists  Build more durable paths from local materials. (Be case specific) Very expensive, cost over £100 per metre. Footpath erosion: Overuse by tourists causes scarring of the landscape.  Employ park rangers to protect the park and educate tourists in the country code. Forest fires cause damage to plants and animals.

Quarrying/mining versus conservation and tourists (both cairngorms and Dorset coast)  Mining scars the landscape, spoiling the beauty  Heavy trucks cause noise pollution and congestion  Jobs and income are provided which can conflict with jobs involved with providing services to tourists or conserving the area. Possible solutions  Damage to landscape can be repaired by landscaping quarries after filling them in or flooding them  Relandscaped quarries can be used as lochs for recreational purposes  Surround the mine/quarry with trees to screen it from view.  Restricted blasting on weekends. Prevent lorry transport to during the day and not weekends.

HEP versus Conservationists (cairngorms)  HEP provides cheap electricity  Valleys or corries are flooded, turned into reservoirs which destroy the natural habitats of plants and animals.  The dams and buildings required are unsightly and spoil the landscape.  The pylons used to transfer the electricity are also unsightly Possible solutions  Use local rock and materials for buildings and dam to help them blend in to the landscape  The buildings are often screened with deciduous trees.  Although expensive power lines can be put underground.  Reservoirs can be used for watersports etc.  The Beauly to Denny Power line has caused controversy as it cuts through the south western corner of the Cairngorm National Park. They have however been able to remove some other pylons from the park as a result of the new line. Slide 11Slide 11

The uniform plantations of coniferous trees are unsightly and spoil/blot the landscape Possible solutions  Hide plantations behind deciduous trees that are more pleasant to look at. Deciduous trees usually found along the roadside. And along forest walks  Make woodland walks through the forest so that plantations offer tourist facilities Wind farms versus Tourism (coastal) Wind farms are unsightly/spoils the landscape and are very noisy. They also can kill local birds that fly into them and can deter tourists from visiting areas with them. Possible solutions  Locate the wind farms in isolated areas away from tourists and also away from local bird colonies.  They can also be located off-shore to avoid conflicts. Forestry versus Tourism (both areas)
