It is good and right to have Convictions It is NEVER right for them to Become a means righteousness Or point of condemnation

Tribalism= Fallen Nature Identity and Sense of Worth Allegiance to and Demonization of Idolatry

What happens when God shows up? When God becomes big? Is he all chill with it?

Peter's Lines…

Should we call down fire? We told them to stop casting out demons in your name… Cuz they weren't with us!

Cornelius …devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly

Cornelius Sends men to get Peter As an angel instructs

Peter went up on the roof to pray

He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance

God shows up… God becomes Big Things are about to get All blowed up

He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners

It contained all kinds of four- footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat”

“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean” I have my lines, my tribe So…no!

The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean”

In everything… God decides where the lines are Our only decision is loyalty Or disobedience

The Faith: We never draw our lines Tighter than Jesus did We never excuse away the lines That Jesus has clearly drawn

The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean”

This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven

While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision Does God really want me To defile myself with unclean food?!? Tribalism dies hard

While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate

They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there

While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you…

So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them

Why would he hesitate? Literally, "making no distinction" They aren't part of his tribe He's a Jew. They ain't

Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people

A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say”

Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along

The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends

As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself”

While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. He said to them…

“You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile

I'm not supposed to be here You guys are dirty, unclean

But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean…

I wouldn't be here But God made me So I guess I'll have to accept you

So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection…

“I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right

"My Tribe isn't the only one And we're not the best ones It's grace, not favoritism Based on how awesome we are"

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message

The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles

For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God

God became Big And blew up Peter's Tribe Obliterated his lines

Then Peter said, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have” - Acts 10

God became big And blew up Peter's lines Ended his tribe And gave him a better one

What happens when God becomes Big? He blows up our tribes And erases our lines To set us free

Peter should have known …receive power…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth- Acts 1:8

Peter should have known For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself- Acts 2:39

Tribalism ends in Christ

God refuses to let it go… For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility

…by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace…

…and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility - Eph. 2:14-16

They'll continue to struggle Jerusalem council

Jewish Tribalism Will continue to fight against What God is doing And harm people along the way

When God becomes Big Tribalism dies and Lines get wiped off the map

Without a Big God We continue to draw lines That grieve God's Spirit

I appeal to you…that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you…

…it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you…

What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ”

Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? - 1 Cor. 1:10-13 Blasphemy- dragging Jesus' Name through the mud

The Scriptures end tribalism Around preachers and Denominations and churches

Danger of Tribalism: - Miss God - False Imputed Righteousness - Condemnation/Alienation - Blindspot on shortcomings - Adopt anti-biblical values

Danger of Tribalism: - Make silly, non-eternal things The standard for Fellowship - See people as less than…

God wants to obliterate your lines And remove your tribalism So that you can be free To serve him by loving people

God's Lines: - Adopted by grace thru faith - Provisioned by not adopted

Among Churches: Accept with differing convictions Refuse outright heresy

Not-Yet Sheep, Sheep Shepherds and Wolves Lines: Reach, Disciple Obey as they Serve, Protect From

We are only tribalistic To the degree that our God Stays small and controllable Because then he's on our side Against them

The answer to Tribalism: Big God= Big Picture Eternal eclipses Temporary

It is good and right to have Convictions It is NEVER right for them to Become a means righteousness Or point of condemnation

The answer: Big God= Big Picture We become Isaiah: Woe is me! I don't deserve, so how can I Look down on you?

Am I tribalistic about Temporary things? Seek God. A BIG God Commit to eternal things first

As a church We know where we stand We teach truth but We don't let them divide us Over temporary things

If we win a tribalistic culture war We've lost the point Of our King's sacrifice On a bloody cross

Questions, Comments Disagreements
