Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Karsten Liesenberg / AS-T Visit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 2007 Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X in the torus-assembly hall Karsten Liesenberg Project Engineer / AS-T

Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Unternehmung WENDELSTEIN 7-X Karsten Liesenberg / AS-TVisit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 20072 Overview mounting stands in torus-assembly hall Mountingstand IIIa Mountingstand IV Machine base Mountingstand IVa

Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Unternehmung WENDELSTEIN 7-X Karsten Liesenberg / AS-TVisit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 20073 Mountingstand IVa (finished in 2005) Mountingstand IVa with outer vessel lower shell, magnet system and plasma vessel In Mountingstand IVa, the outer vessel lower shell and the magnet system are put together.

Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Unternehmung WENDELSTEIN 7-X Karsten Liesenberg / AS-TVisit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 20074 Machine base and temp. supports (finished in 2006) Supporting structure (1 module) assembly phase Supporting structure (1 module) operating phase Machine base Temp. supports On the machine base and further temporary supports the stellarator (dead weight approx. 8000 kN ) is supported during the assembly phase and the operating phase.

Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Unternehmung WENDELSTEIN 7-X Karsten Liesenberg / AS-TVisit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 20075 Mountingstand IV (finished in 2007) Basis platform Alignment system Measuring column Adjustment of 1 module in mountingstand IV In mountingstand IV the final assembly of the stellarator will be done. All 5 modules are aligned with an accuracy by ≤1.5 mm in all directions and afterwards welds or bolts with each other. Module with cross beam

Final assembly of Stellarator W7-X Max-Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik Unternehmung WENDELSTEIN 7-X Karsten Liesenberg / AS-TVisit NCSX engineers 11/12 October 20076 Adjustment test in mountingstand IV (in 2007) An adjustment test for 1 module was accomplished successfully with a 100 t dummy load (accuracy ≤1.5 mm). A further adjustment test takes place in November 2007. For a final adjustment of the module we want to test a movement in all directions with radius of 5 mm with help of the sliding bearings and hydraulic cylinders in the temporary supports and the cryofeets. Module with cross beam Dummy load
