DMA Tuesday, October 27 th 2015 Read the text I provide you by Gary Provost. Briefly analyze this text using the Liu Method: What is the claim? (Foundation) What is the structure of this text? (Architecture) Lastly, describe the diction, syntax and tone of this text, which Liu calls “music”.

Get ready to write some stuff down!

What are the 4 basic sentence types? Declarative – a statement Interrogative – a question Exclamatory – a statement with emotion Imperative - a command

Declarative: Today we will go to the store. Interrogative: Will we go to the store today? Exclamatory: Today we will go to the store! Imperative: Go to the store today.

Declarative Imperative Exclamatory Interrogative

Clause: a group of words containing a subject and a predicate, that does not necessarily constitute a sentence. Independent/main clause– it can stand on its own as a complete sentence. Dependent/subordinate clause– it can NOT stand on its own as a complete sentence. Examples to come…

Two independent clauses (complete sentences): I will go to the movie. I will complete my homework. I will go to the movie when I complete my homework. When I complete my homework, I will go to the movie. When you add a “subordinating conjunction” such as when, therefore, because, if, after, etc. in front of an independent clause, it becomes a subordinate clause. It can no longer stand on its own.

Due Friday: 2 nd Quarter Independent Books are due! Presidential Debate assignment is due – just save it in my S Drive in box – no need to print it out! SUMMATIVE Op Ed - SOAPStoneR – Same Group, Same Topic. DO print out. Summative assignments are deducted 10% per day late so don’t be late!

DMA: Please write one type of each sentence. If you need an idea for a subject, write about Halloween: Declarative Exclamatory Interrogative Imperative
